Freshmen pace Roadrunners in round one of Ron Moore Intercollegiate

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — True freshmen Kayla Black and Victoria Schuldt each carded a 2-under-par scorecard to lead the UTSA women’s golf team in the first round of the Ron Moore Intercollegiate, which teed off Friday at University of Denver Golf Club at Highlands Ranch (par 72/6,622 yards).

Black and Schuldt both turned in a 70 and are part of a seven-way tie for 13th place, while the Roadrunners are in eighth place at even par with 36 holes left to play.

Black wrote down six birdies en route to registering the top round of her true freshman season. A native of Mississauga, Ontario, she started on No. 10 and immediately countered a bogey on her opening hole with three straight birdies. She added a fourth on the back with a four in the par-5 18th to close out a 3-under 33 on that side. Black tacked on two more birdies on the front before settling for a double bogey and bogey on the final two holes.

Schuldt logged four birdies while also posting the low round of her debut campaign. The freshman from Germany birdied the par-5 11th and negated a bogey on the 17th by circling her number on the 18th for a 35 on the back. She then recorded back-to-back birdies on Nos. 2-2 to get to 3-under par for the round before a bogey on the fifth knocked her back to 2-under.

Daniela Abonce and Lauren Rios are knotted for 43rd at 2-over par. Abonce, a senior from Mexico, saw her 74 highlighted by a birdie on the par-3 17th. Rios, a senior out of Coppell, Texas, posted a pair of birdies over a three-hole stretch on the back.

Sydney Bisgrove started her weekend with four birdies in a row and five as part of a 34 on the back before adding another on the first en route to shooting a 76 that has her tied for 64th.

Vanderbilt has the day-one lead at 17-under par, followed by Colorado (-12) in the 15-team field. UTSA is one shot ahead of Colorado State and only two strokes out of the top five.

The second round is scheduled for Saturday.
