Skanska Celebrates Topping Out Milestone at UTSA Basketball and Volleyball Training Center

by Sean Cartell

SAN ANTONIO - Skanska, one of the world’s leading construction and development firms, announced it has reached a significant milestone at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) with the topping out of the new basketball and volleyball training center. The $35 million, 52,000-square-foot project will support the daily operations of UTSA’s men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs.

The facility features tilt-wall construction—a method in which concrete wall panels are poured on-site and then lifted into place once cured. After completing the groundwork, the team reached this milestone in under three weeks. All 33 tilt-wall panels are now standing, with the largest panel weighing 117,000 pounds and measuring 30 feet wide by 43 feet tall. The crane used for the lifts weighed over 700,000 pounds.

“Reaching this milestone is a reflection of the dedication and collaboration exhibited by the entire project team, including UTSA and our trade partners,” said Matt McCaffrey, vice president and account manager with Skanska USA Building San Antonio. “We are grateful for the trust UTSA has placed in us to deliver this project and look forward to bringing this state-of-the-art facility to life for Roadrunner Athletics.

"The two-story training facility for UTSA’s men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs will house the daily operations. This space will provide all the practice amenities associated with top-tier NCAA Division I basketball and volleyball."

"The topping out of the Basketball and Volleyball Training Center marks an important step forward in the continued growth of Roadrunner Athletics," said UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos. "This state-of-the-art facility will provide our basketball and volleyball programs with the dedicated spaces and resources necessary to support their continued pursuit of excellence. We appreciate the partnership and commitment of Skanska and all those who have contributed to the realization of this significant project."

The project is expected to be completed by fall 2026.

Skanska has delivered more than 130 higher education projects across Texas, representing over $1.8 billion in investment.
