SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will make the short trip to San Marcos for the Jim West Challenge, which will be held Sunday-Monday, Oct. 19-20, at Kissing Tree Golf Club (par 72/6,236 yards).
The Roadrunners will feature a lineup consisting of Victoria Schuldt, Lauren Rios, Kayla Black, Maria Bastarrica and Daniela Abonce.
UTSA will compete against No. 33 Florida State, Houston, New Mexico, North Texas, Northern Illinois, Notre Dame, No. 38 Ohio State, No. 19 Oklahoma, No. 41 TCU, No. 5 Texas A&M, host Texas State, No. 44 Texas Tech and UNLV.
The field will play 36 holes on Sunday and 18 on Monday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun starts scheduled for both days.
Live scoring will be provided at scoreboard.clippd.com. ESPN+ will air coverage starting at 1:30 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. Monday.
This will mark UTSA’s fourth straight and eighth overall appearance in the Jim West Challenge. Two years ago, the Roadrunners registered a school-record 15-under-par 273 to finish seventh with a 14-under 850, the second-best 54-hole total in UTSA annals.
The Roadrunners, who are 80th in the latest SCOREBOARD national rankings, are coming off a seventh-place showing at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate two weeks ago in Colorado. UTSA was paced by Victoria Schuldt, who carded an even-par 216 to tie for 15th.
Rios leads UTSA this fall with a 72.78 stroke average in nine rounds. The senior from Coppell, Texas, has logged five par-or-better scorecards, including a pair of 2-under 70s. Her top finish was a tie for third with a 1-under 215 (71-70-74) at the Red Raider Invitational last month.
Abonce is close behind Rios with a 72.89 scoring mark through three events. The senior from Veracruz, Mexico, opened the campaign with an 8-under 208 that featured a 7-under 65 and 3-under 69 to tie for fourth at the Sam Golden Invitational. She tied for 16th with a 3-under 213 (73-73-67) at last year’s Jim West Challenge after placing 31st (71-76-72—219) as a freshman in 2022 and 34th (72-74-70—216) in 2023.
Black ranks third on the squad with a 73.89 average in nine rounds. The freshman from Canada has posted four par-or-better scores including a season-best 70 in the opening round of the Ron Moore Intercollegiate.
Schuldt carries a 75.0 stroke average and three par-or-better rounds during her true freshman season. A native of Germany, she is coming off her best finish of the year with the 15th-place tie in Colorado.
Bastarrica, a junior from Spain, will make her second appearance of the fall after tying for 43rd at the Red Raider Invitational. She finished 53rd with a 227 (77-76-74) at last year’s Jim West Challenge and 42nd with a 1-over 217 (72-71-74) in 2023.
