CORINTH, Texas — Daniela Abonce finished in a tie for fourth place and UTSA grabbed a share of eighth place with the second-best team score in program history at the Sam Golden Invitational, which concluded Tuesday at Oakmont Country Club (par 72/6,343 yards).
Abonce carded an 8-under-par 208 to earn her fifth career top 10 and notch her third-best 54-hole total as a Roadrunner. The senior from Veracruz, Mexico, turned in a pair of sub-70 rounds to push her UTSA career tally to 12 and help the Roadrunners to a 15-under 849, the second-best 54-hole team score in school history behind the 837 posted at this same event two years ago.
UTSA, which registered rounds of 287 and 284 sandwiched around a 10-under 278, finished in a tie for eighth with Nebraska, 11 shots ahead of Central Arkansas and only nine strokes out of the runner-up position in the 13-team field. Missouri claimed the team title with a 40-under 824 behind individual medalist Ebba Liljeberg, who fired a 19-under 197 (66-61-70). The Tigers were followed by Tulsa and North Texas in a tie for second (840).
One day after matching her collegiate career-best of 7-under 65, Abonce broke 70 again with a 3-under 69 in the final round to jump four places into a share of fourth. She logged an eagle for the second straight day with a three on the 523-yard 13th hole and she added four birdies, including back-to-back on Nos. 14-15. Abonce finished the week as the only player in the field with two eagles and she ranked 12th with a team-high 12 birdies. Her 8-under 208 marks her third-best score as a Roadrunner, trailing only a 204 at the 2023 Sam Golden Invitational and a 207 posted in winning the 2024 American Conference Championship.
Sydney Bisgrove matched her best finish and registered her top score as a Roadrunner, tying for 25th with a 4-under 212. The sophomore from Calgary, Alberta, opened with a career-best 3-under 69 on Monday morning and then carded a 1-under 71 in round two. She closed with an even-par 72 on Tuesday that was highlighted by a trio of birdies as part of a 3-under 33 on the front nine.
Lauren Rios was one shot behind Bisgrove in a tie for 30th at 3-under 213, also notching her top 54-hole total at UTSA. Playing near her hometown of Coppell, she logged a one-shot improvement in each round after opening with a 72 and closing with a 70. Her final 18 holes featured four birdies, including back-to-back on Nos. 14-15.
Making her UTSA debut, Kayla Black carded an even-par 216 (72-71-73) to claim a share of 41st. A native of Mississauga, Ontario, she wrote down three birdies in her final round including two that helped her card a 2-under 34 on the front.
Also making her first appearance as a Roadrunner, Victoria Schuldt tied for 71st with a 231 (74-77-80).
The Roadrunners will return to the course on Sept. 23-24 at the Red Raider Invitational in Lubbock.
