SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA men’s golf team will tee off the fall campaign at the Argent Financial Invitational hosted by Louisiana Tech on Sunday-Tuesday, Sept. 7-9, at Squire Creek Country Club (par 72/7,105 yards) in Choudrant, Louisiana.
The Roadrunners will travel a lineup of Joshua Hong, Logan Vargas, Brayden Bare, Francisco Solorza and Jacob King. UTSA will line up against Houston, Jacksonville State, Lamar, Louisiana, Louisiana Tech, LSU, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Nicholls, North Texas, Rice, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Troy, UAB, ULM and Western Kentucky.
The field will play 18 holes each day. Live scoring will be provided at scoreboard.clippd.com.
This will mark UTSA’s fifth appearance in the Argent Financial Invitational, formerly the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate, and the first since 2022. The Roadrunners’ best finish at the event was a runner-up effort in 2021 when they carded a 16-under 848 which featured a 16-under 272, tied for the third best round versus par in program history.
UTSA is entering its fourth season under the direction of head coach Matt Wernecke, who welcomes back five veterans from last year’s team that registered four top-10 finishes.
Of the returnees, Logan Zurn posted the best scoring average in 2024-25 with a 74.04 mark. The senior from Grapevine, Texas, logged five top-30 showings highlighted by a 16th-place tie at the Desert Intercollegiate where he fired a 4-under-par 212.
Bare was close behind with a 74.74 stroke average last season. A redshirt junior from Waco, he posted a pair of top 10s this past spring including a share of sixth at the All-American Individual. He closed the campaign by firing a 5-under 211 to tie for 17th at the American Conference Championship.
David Martinez posted a 74.33 average in four events during his true freshman season. The Houston native turned in a 1-under 215 at the Desert Intercollegiate to tie for 10th place for his top finish of 2024-25.
Vargas played in 10 tournaments and tallied a 74.97 scoring average last season. The Lubbock native finished the year on a strong note by tying for 19th with a 4-under 212 at the American Conference Championship.
King recorded a 76.78 average while playing in three tournaments this past spring. His top finish was a tie for 10th at the OU Spring Indy where he carded a 221.
Three newcomers have joined the roster for this season.
Hong is a freshman from Guadalajara, Mexico, who was the top-ranked junior golfer in his native country in both the World Amateur Golf Rankings and Junior Golf Scoreboard.
Redshirt freshman transfer Francisco Solorza is also a native of Guadalajara, joining the Roadrunners after spending last season at Loyola-Marymount.
UTSA also brought in the No. 1-ranked amateur in Nepal in freshman Sam Acharya, who has won numerous tournaments including the 2025 Bangladesh Amateur Golf Championship.
