SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Roadrunners pick up their first win of the season, defeating DePaul 3-2 (23-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-21, 23-21). UTSA also fell to host school Missouri State 1-3 (28-26, 17-25, 25-18, 25-13) on Friday, Sept. 5 at the Hammons Student Center in Springfield, Mo.
GAME ONE (vs. DePaul)
Set One
After a back-and-forth battle, DePaul got out to the first big lead of the match by going on a five-point run to go up 6-11 over the Blue Demons. The Roadrunners managed to battle back as they went on a four-point run to take a 13-12 lead.
The Blue Demons won the race to 20 with the Roadrunners trailing by just one point. DePaul was then able to close it out, going on a three-point scoring run, defeating the Roadrunners 25-23.
Set Two
DePaul jumped out to an early lead, taking a nine-point lead over UTSA. They kept pushing, managing to reach 20 points, while the Roadrunners had nine. UTSA then fought back as they went on an 8-0 run A point run led by Caroline Tredwell served to make the score 23-19 in favor of DePaul.
After back-to-back kills from Ally Tribe, the Roadrunners were within three with DePaul on set point. However, the Roadrunners were unable to complete the comeback as they fell 22-25.
Set Three
UTSA jumped out to its first commanding lead of the match as the won the race to 20, leading DePaul by five. After a block assist by Tredwell and Gigi Mason, as well as an attack error from DePaul, the Roadrunners just needed two more points. Tribe was able to seal the set victory for UTSA with a kill to defeat DePaul 25-19.
Set Four
The Roadrunners notched the first run by either team to go up 13-10 over DePaul. After two points from the Blue Demons, UTSA had another three-point run. Thanks to a five-point surge, the Roadrunners won the race 20 14, up six points over DePaul. UTSA was able to close it out thanks to a kill by Mason, winning set four 25-21.
Set Five
UTSA and DePaul were in a hard-fought match for the game-deciding set as they went back and forth until eventually being tied at 15 apiece. Both teams went back and forth, unable to seal the match away until Tribe had a service ace to put UTSA up 22-21. Brook Elliot sealed the Roadrunners’ first win of the season on a kill to defeat DePaul 23-21 in the fifth set.
GAME TWO (at Missouri State)
Set One
The Roadrunners went through another hard-fought set, going back and forth against the Bears. UTSA was able to win the race to 20 but was just up by one. Both teams traded blows until Missouri State was able to pull away from UTSA, winning the first set 28-26.
Set Two
UTSA jumped out to an early lead, going on a five-point surge to have a 6-1 lead. UTSA held firm to the lead throughout the entirety of the second set. Winning the second set 25-17. Besides the five-point surge, the Roadrunners also had a three-point run and a four-point run in that set.
Set Three
The Roadrunners and Missouri State went back and forth at the start of the third set. The Bears won the race to 20 thanks to a three-point surge to go up 20-16 over UTSA. Missouri State held strong to the lead, winning their second set of the match 25-18.
Set Four
The Bears took a commanding lead in the fourth set as they went up 11-2 over the Roadrunners. UTSA made a push to come back as they cut the lead to five points. The Bears were able to hold firm as they defeated the Roadrunners 25-13.
Notes
- Tribe picked up her second double-double of the season with 18 kills and 12 digs against DePaul.
- Ilaria Durante recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 digs and 29 assists against DePaul.
- Mason recorded her first career double-digit kills of the season with 23 against DePaul.
- Megan Hawkins recorded her first double-double with the Roadrunners, notching 22 assists and 12 digs.
- Taylor Gaines recorded her third and fourth double-digit kill matches of the season.
- Mason had a career high of 23 kills against DePaul, which was also a team-high individual kill.
