UTSA bests Charlotte for first American victory

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA took down Charlotte 3-1 (25-14, 18-25, 27-25, 26-24) in American Conference action on Sunday, Sept. 28, at the Convocation Center in San Antonio, Texas. 

Set One

It was all UTSA early in the first, with the 'Runners building a 13-5 advantage off multiple runs. From there, the Roadrunners cruised to a 25-14 victory.

Set Two

The second stanza was a back-and-forth battle, as the teams exchanged blows en route to a 10-10 tie. Charlotte scored in five of the following seven rallies to take a 15-12 advantage, prompting a UTSA timeout. The 49ers then kept the Roadrunners at arm's length, winning the race to 20, before claiming the set, 25-18.

Set Three

A four-point swing in the third helped UTSA to a 7-5 lead, but Charlotte bounced back shortly after, working a 14-14 score line. Neither team could gain an inch until the 49ers sparked a 6-0 run that saw a 22-18 edge. The Roadrunners didn't go quietly, taking the next three rallies to pull within one. After trading points, UTSA knotted things up, 24-24, working a win-by-two situation. A kill and consecutive service aces by Caroline Tredwell followed, cementing a 27-25 Roadrunner win.

Set Four

Charlotte found a 15-10 advantage in the fourth, and UTSA again responded, with a 6-2 run trimming the deficit to one. Drama ensued as the Roadrunners reached match point and induced a Charlotte timeout. The 49ers scored out of the break, tying the game at 24-24, ahead of consecutive UTSA points that secured a 26-24 set victory, ultimately clinching the match.  

Notes

- UTSA picked up its first American Conference victory of the campaign, improving to 1-1.

- Taylor Gaines grabbed her ninth double-digit kill match with 11. 

- Ally Tribe recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 12 digs and 12 kills. 

- Caroline Tredwell tied her career-high with a match-best three service aces, and 10 kills are her fourth double-digit performance of the season.

- Giada Obregon recorded her first collegiate kill and led the match with 18 digs.
