MADISON, Wis. — Led by a trio of top-30 finishes and a 2-under-par scorecard from Logan Vargas in the final round, the UTSA men’s golf team finished in eighth place at the Badger Invitational, which concluded Tuesday at TPC Wisconsin (par 72/7,272 yards).
The Roadrunners registered an 871 (292-290-289) for the tournament to finish one shot ahead of a tie between Minnesota and Oakland and 14 strokes in front of host Wisconsin. UTSA was only three shots behind Xavier and 10 out of the top five in the 14-team field.
Vargas’ 70 paced the Roadrunners in their 1-over 289 in round three. The senior from Lubbock logged three birdies, including two on the back nine where he carded a 3-under 33, and an eagle on the 518-yard, par-5 10th en route to his best score of the season.
Joshua Hong was UTSA’s top finisher for the week, earning a share of 24th at 2-over 218. The freshman from Guadalajara, Mexico, opened the event with back-to-back rounds of 1-under 71 before settling for a 76 for the final 18. He finished with nine birdies and one of the Roadrunners’ three eagles, the most by any team in the field. He now has turned in a red number in seven of his nine rounds this fall and boasts a 71.3 stroke average.
Logan Zurn and Brayden Bare finished as part of a deadlock for 29th at 3-over 219.
Zurn, a senior from Grapevine, Texas, posted a pair of even-par 72s sandwiched around a 75 in round two. His final 18 holes featured four birdies and an eagle on the 551-yard, par-5 second hole. He finished the week with a team-high 13 birdies.
Bare, a redshirt junior out of Waco, also carded a 72 in the final round on the strength of three birdies, all on the back nine. After opening with a 73, he turned in a 74 in the second round before ending the event with his third par-or-better score of the season.
Vargas’ 70 in the final round vaulted him into a tie for 40th at 5-over 221 (78-73-70), while Jacob King rounded out the lineup in a tie for 54th at 7-over 223 (76-72-75).
Southern Miss claimed the team title with an 841, while Southern Illinois and Illinois State tied for second (851).
The Roadrunners will wrap up their fall slate on Oct. 5-7 at the Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas.
