SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s golf team will head to Lubbock to play in the Red Raider Invitational on Tuesday-Wednesday, Sept. 23-24, at The Rawls Course.
The Roadrunners will bring a lineup of Daniela Abonce, Victoria Schuldt, Lauren Rios, Kayla Black and Maria Bastarrica, while Sydney Bisgrove will play as an individual.
UTSA will compete against Abilene Christian, Ball State, Cal Baptist, Central Arkansas, Houston Christian, James Madison, New Mexico, Sam Houston, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, host Texas Tech, UIW, UT Arlington, UTEP and UTRGV.
The field will play 36 holes on Tuesday and 18 on Wednesday. Live scoring will be provided at scoreboard.clippd.com.
The Roadrunners placed ninth at last year’s Red Raider Invitational behind top-30 finishes from Bastarrica (T-26), Abonce (T-28), Olivia Williams (T-28) and Morgan Ellison (T-28).
UTSA is coming off an eighth-place tie with a 15-under 849 — the second-best 54-hole team score in school history — at the season-opening Sam Golden Invitational on Sept. 8-9 in Corinth, Texas. Abonce led the way by earning a share of fourth place with an 8-under-par 208, her fifth career top 10 and third-best 54-hole total as a Roadrunner. After opening with a 74, the senior from Mexico fired a career best-tying 7-under 65 and a 3-under 69.
Bisgrove was the second-highest finishing UTSA player, tying for 25th with a 4-under 212. The sophomore from Canada opened the campaign with a career-best 69 and then closed with rounds of 71 and 72 to notch her best 54-hole total as a Roadrunner.
Rios carded a 3-under 213 to tie for 30th at the Sam Golden Invitational. After opening with an even-par scorecard, the Coppell, Texas, native posted one-shot improvements in each round including a 2-under 70 for the final 18 holes.
Kayla Black made her UTSA debut two weeks ago, posting an even-par 216 to tie for 41st. A native of Canada, she carded a 72 in the first round and then logged a 1-under 71 before finishing with a 73.
Schuldt also competed in the Sam Golden Invitational earlier this month, tying for 71st. The freshman from Germany registered a 231 that was highlighted by a 74 in the opening round.
Bastarrica will make her season debut this week in Lubbock. The junior from Spain played in 10 tournaments last season and posted a 77.27 stroke average and a pair of top-30 finishes, including her tie for 26th with a 222 at the Red Raider Invitational.
