SAN ANTONIO – The Roadrunners kicked off the first day of the Roadrunner Classic with a win over UT Arlington 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-13) and North Florida 3-1 (20-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-18) on Friday, Sept. 19 at the Convocation Center.
GAME ONE (vs. UT Arlington)
Set One
The Roadrunners took a 9-5 lead thanks to a pair of three-point surges. UT Arlington was able to mount a comeback as they went on a 4-0 run to make the set 14-13 in favor of UTSA. The Roadrunners won the first set, closing it out with an eight-point scoring run to win 25-15. Ally Tribe shined as she recorded five total service aces.
Set Two
UT Arlington managed to tie the second set at nine apiece. From there, UTSA went on a seven-point scoring run to take a 16-9 lead over the Mavericks. The Roadrunners won the race 20 as they led by six points. UT Arlington attempted a comeback but was unsuccessful as the Roadrunners won 25-21.
Set Three
UTSA took an early lead thanks to a 7-1 scoring surge to go up 9-3. The Roadrunners kept their foot on the gas as they managed to go up 15-5 over the Mavericks. They continued their dominance as they won the race to 20, winning by eleven points. UTSA closed it out winning 25-13.
GAME TWO (vs. North Florida
Set One
Both teams battled back and forth in the first set of the match as they were tied at 10 apiece. North Florida took control of the match as they jumped up to a 17-12 lead. UTSA then went on a four-point surge to cut the North Florida led to one, making it 17-16. The Ospreys won the race to 20 leading by two. North Florida took set one, winning 25-20.
Set Two
The Roadrunners dominated the second set as they went up 15-10 before a media timeout. A service ace by Taylor Gaines allowed UTSA to win the race to 20, being up 20-12. The Roadrunners closed the set out thanks to a four-point surge, winning 25-16.
Set Three
In the third set, both teams battled; however, North Florida was able to lead UTSA 10-8 before the Roadrunners took a timeout. UTSA was able to fight back and take a 14-10 lead thanks to a six-point scoring surge. UTSA kept the consecutive scoring going as they won the race to 20, being up 10 on the back of Caroline Tredwell serving. The Roadrunners closed it out, winning 25-14.
Set Four
The Roadrunners were able to take a 15-11 lead over the Ospreys thanks to an attack error by the Ospreys. UTSA won the race to 20 on a three-point scoring run to go up five over North Florida. The Roadrunners were then able to close out the win by taking the fourth set 25-18.
Notes
- Tribe recorded five service aces in the first set, which is a career high for Tribe against UT Arlington.
- With 21 assists against North Florida, Ilaria Durante now has 2,019 career assists.
- Tribe picked up her fifth double-double against North Florida with 14 kills and 17 digs.
- Gaines had her seventh double-digit kill match with 12 kills.
