WESTCHESTER, Ill. — The UTSA men’s golf team is in seventh place after the first day of the Highlands Invitational, which teed off Monday at Chicago Highlands Club (par 72/7,349 yards).
The Roadrunners opened the 54-hole event with a 299 and currently are 7-over par with up to three holes remaining in their second round, which was suspended due to darkness. UTSA is sitting at 18-over par, one shot ahead of Iowa and two in front of Louisiana Tech in the 13-team field.
UTSA was paced by Logan Zurn and Joshua Hong, who are part of a tie for 25th at 4-over par, on the opening day.
Zurn opened the event with a 2-over 74 in the first round. The senior from Grapevine, Texas, bounced back from a pair of bogeys with birdies on the 615-yard, par-5 seventh and the 183-yard, par-3 13th. He added two more on the 519-yard, par-5 15th and the 389-yard, par-4 16th holes to help negate a double bogey on the 14th. Zurn is 2-over par with one hole left in his second round.
Hong also carded a 74 over the opening 18. The freshman from Guadalajara, Mexico, circled his number on No. 7 and on the 344-yard, par-4 ninth. He is also 2-over par with three holes remaining in his second round, which include a pair of birdies so far.
Logan Vargas is one shot behind his teammates in a tie for 33rd at 5-over par. The senior out of Lubbock registered a trio of birdies during an opening-round 75, and he has added two more during his second round with three holes to go.
Brayden Bare is tied for 44th at 7-over par, as the redshirt junior from Waco opened with a 78 but is currently 1-over with a pair of holes left to play in his second round thanks to a trio of birdies.
Francisco Solorza rounds out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 56th (+9). The redshirt freshman from Mexico posted a 76 in the morning and a 77 in the afternoon, as he was the only Roadrunner to finish his second round.
Behind individual leader Jorge Hao (-14), Wake Forest tops the team standings at 17-under par followed by host East Tennessee State (-13) and Coastal Carolina (+1) in the top three.
The second round will resume at 7 a.m. Tuesday followed by the final round.
