SAN ANTONIO – UTSA falls to regional rival Texas State 3-1 (25-17, 34-32, 23-25, 25-23) in UTSA Invitational finale on Saturday, Aug. 30 at the Convocation Center.
SET ONE
Texas State started an early surge with an 8-1 run to go up 9-4 over the Roadrunners. The Bobcats then went on a six-point run, going up 17-8. The ‘Runners stayed strong, battling back from 20-9, but were unable to complete the comeback as Texas State won the set 25-17.
SET TWO
Both teams battled back and four before UTSA went on a five-point scoring run to go up 19-18 over the Bobcats. The set was a hard-fought battle with 66 total points scored by both teams. Texas State managed to take the marathon set, winning 34-32.
SET THREE
In another hard-fought match, the Roadrunners were able to win the race 20. UTSA went on a three-point lead after Texas State was able to tie it up at 20-20. Texas State then went on a three-point run of their own to tie it at 23-23. Thanks to a kill by Caroline Tredwell, the Roadrunners forced a set point and managed to win their first set of the season on an attack error committed by the Bobcats.
SET FOUR
The Roadrunners and the Bobcats went into another dogfight for the fourth set as both teams went back and forth throughout the entirety of the set. The Bobcats won the race to 20 once again going up 22-16 over UTSA. The Roadrunners, however, still had some fight in them as they went on a five-point run to go down just one point. After a kill from Ally Tribe the Roadrunners were one point from tying it up but were unable to stop a Bobcat attack, falling 25-23.
NOTES
- Freshman defensive specialist Keelea Alexander and freshman middle blocker Derin Saygi notched their first collegiate appearance.
- Ilaria Durante earned her first double-double wearing a UTSA uniform with 24 assists and 11 digs.
- Tribe grabbed her first double-double of the season with 17 kills and 10 digs.
- Freshman Taylor Gaines recorded her first kill of her career, racking up 11.
- Freshman Giada Obregon tallied 16 digs for a career high.
