UTSA/UIW soccer game set for Sept. 4 at Toyota Field

SAN ANTONIO – For the second consecutive season, the soccer contest between UTSA and UIW will be played at San Antonio FC’s Toyota Field, officials from the two collegiate programs and the professional club announced on Wednesday, Aug. 20. The third official edition of the Hometown Showdown between the Roadrunners and Cardinals will be played on Thursday, Sept. 4, scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.

“We are excited to announce that we will host our annual rivalry match versus UIW at Toyota Field for the second straight year,” UTSA eighth-year head coach Derek Pittman said. “It was a great atmosphere with nearly 1,500 fans in attendance last season, and we can’t wait to do it again. We hope that all of our UTSA Fans will show up and be rowdy to beat last year’s total and help our players compete in front of over 2,000 San Antonio soccer supporters.”

The face-off will be the seventh game of UTSA’s schedule and sixth for the Cardinals’ 2025 slate. In last year’s game two matchup, the crosstown programs met for just the third time in the regular season. The Roadrunners secured a 1-0 shutout after Olivia Alvarez smashed a 51st-minute penalty kick into the upper right corner of the net in front of 1,459 San Antonio soccer fans – the largest crowd to attend a UTSA-hosted soccer contest since 2008. UTSA put up a constant offensive barrage against UIW, holding a 29-6 shot advantage and 13 on-goal attempts.

“We’re thrilled to once again partner with San Antonio FC and Toyota Field to showcase the Hometown Showdown,” said Lisa Campos, UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics. “Our city has an incredible passion for soccer and we’re excited to provide a first-class experience for our student-athletes and fans. We’re looking forward to a great environment as we continue to unite the San Antonio community around Roadrunners Athletics.”

Tickets for the general public to the Sept. 4 Hometown Showdown are $10 (plus applicable fees) for general admission and parking in lots 1 and 2 will be five dollars. A portion of all proceeds will go directly toward supporting the soccer programs. This game is not part of the UTSA season ticket package. For tickets online, please visit SAFC Tickets. The first 300 students from UTSA and UIW will receive free admission by presenting their student ID at the Toyota Field box office.

The Roadrunners open 2025 in the eighth season under head coach Derek Pittman and are coming off an 8-7-3 finish during the program’s second season in the American Conference. The Cardinals are in their third season under head coach Jake Plant, who guided UIW to an 8-8-3 finish and the first Southland Conference tournament appearance since 2021.

Ahead of the meeting with UIW, the Roadrunners will face defending SEC Champion Texas in their second and final exhibition of the preseason on Friday, Aug. 8, in Austin. UTSA will formally kick off its historic 20th soccer season on Thursday, Aug. 14, against Houston at 7 p.m. within the friendly confines of the Park West Athletics Complex.

Season tickets for the 10-game home slate at Park West are on sale now and all UTSA Soccer season tickets are general admission. Season tickets are $65. For an additional $35 at time of purchase (a total price of $100), season-ticket members will receive a limited-edition UTSA Soccer 20th Season scarf and will be invited to exclusive chalk-talks with head coach Derek Pittman and his staff before select home games.
