UTSA announces signing of thrower David Guzman

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Aaron Fox announced on Tuesday that the Roadrunners will add another experienced thrower to the squad, signing Mexico national champion David Guzman to the roster for the upcoming season.

"David has already proven himself on the big stage, not just as a national champion in his home country but in two trips to the NCAA Championships already,” Fox said. “We’re excited to get him on campus this fall and help him continue developing toward his potential in the circle and in the classroom.”

Originally from Querataro, Mexico and a graduate of COBAQ 13 Desarrollo Académico Deportivo (DAD), Guzman comes to San Antonio following a strong rookie season at Texas A&M – Kingsville. Guzman just earned a pair of bronze medals at the Mexican Championships in Mexico City. At the end of July in Tlaxcala, he collected silver in the shot put and also a bronze in shot put at the Olimpiada Nacional Conade 2025 National U23 Championships. He’s qualified to represent Mexico in both events at the Junior Pan American Games, Aug. 18-22, in Asunción, Paraguay.

Guzman closed out his first collegiate season with a seventh-place shot put finish (17.73m/58-2) and ninth-place discus finish (54.12m/177-7) at the 2025 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Pueblo, Colorado. Guzman headed up a Kingsville throws unit that led NCAA Division II in the discus and was second in the shot put among the national outdoor USTFCCCA event squad rankings.

He earned silver in the shot put at the 2025 Lone Star Outdoor Championships, coming in fourth in the discus and 12th in hammer throw. Competing in Austin at the Texas Invitational last season, he registered season-best marks of 55.20m (181-1) in the discus and 18.12m (59-5.5) in the shot. Guzman also produced a 10th-place shot put finish up against a strong national field at the 97th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.

In his first competition in San Antonio, he won the 2025 UTSA Invitational shot put and collected discus silver at Park West, also coming in ninth in the hammer with a season-best 46.01m (150-11).

Guzman earned 11th place for a Second Team All-America finish in the shot put on a toss of 17.47m (57-3.75) at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships in Indianapolis, following up a Lone Star Conference Indoor Championships shot put silver and weight throw bronze. He recorded a season-best 18.10m (59-4.75) in the weight throw at the FasTrak Athletix Collegiate Indoor Last Chance.

Before coming to the Lone Star State, Guzman won the 2023 Mexican U20 Championships in Mexico City, topping the shot put with a 17.35m toss, while also earning national silver in the discus on a 52.91m measurement. During the all-classes 2023 Mexican Championships, he earned fifth in both events. At the 2022 Mexican U20/U18 Championships in his hometown of Queretaro, he collected his first national shot put title along with a discus silver medal.
