GREENVILLE, N.C. — UTSA splits the Saturday doubleheader, winning the first game 7-6 and falling in the second 8-7 on Saturday, May 10 at Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium in Greenville, N.C. The win in game one earned the Roadrunners their 39th win of the season, which ties the program record for most wins in a single season set in the 2008 and 1994 seasons.

GAME ONE BASICS:
Score: UTSA 7, East Carolina 6
Records: UTSA 39-10 (20-3), ECU 27-23 (11-12)

UTSA was able to strike first in the first inning as Mason Lytle reached on a hit by pitch. Lytle then picked up his 14th stolen bag of the year. Andrew Stucky notched his 35th RBI of the year on a single to left field to put UTSA up 1-0.

East Carolina was able to even that ballgame at 1-1 on a groundout to shortstop Ty Hodge. ECU then took the lead from the Roadrunners in the fifth thanks to an RBI double to go up 2-1 over UTSA.

In the top of the sixth, Stucky reached on a fielder’s choice. Stucky was able to reach second on a groundout to the first baseman.  Drew Detlefsen drove in Stucky on a single through the left side to tie the game at 2-2.

ECU regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run to go up 3-2 over UTSA. The Pirates added another run in the eighth on their second solo homer of the game to go up 4-2.

Jordan Ballin got things started for the Roadrunners in the top of the ninth with a walk. Both Ty Hodge and Diego Diaz drew a walk to load the bases. Lead-off hitter Caden Miller drew his 36th walk to drive in a run. The walk from Miller was his 36th on the season, which tied the program record for most walks in a single season by a freshman.

Lytle came up huge for UTSA, hitting a bases-clearing double, putting UTSA up 6-4. Stucky then singled through the right side to give UTSA their fifth run of the inning and a 7-4 lead.

Orloski came into pitch for UTSA in the ninth, giving up two runs but ultimately striking out the final batter, giving UTSA the 7-6 win. Connor Kelley threw 2.2 innings, allowing just two hits and two runs with four strikeouts en route to the win.

GAME TWO BASICS:

In the first, Lytle led the game off with a single to the shortstop. He then took his 15th stolen base of the season. Taussig delivered a single to center field, scoring Lytle for UTSA’s first run of the game. ECU took the lead in the bottom half of the first on a grand slam.

Catcher Lorenzo Morresi singled through the right side to get things started for UTSA in the second. Cade Sadler then singled, advancing Morresi to second. In his first start of the year, John Maldonado Jr. singled to the left side, scoring Morresi. Lytle then singled to left field, which allowed Sadler to score.

Stucky drew a walk to load the bases for UTSA. With Norris McClure at the plate, there was a wild pitch that let Maldonado score, tying the game at 4-4. McClure then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, giving UTSA a 5-4 lead.

After five scoreless innings, UTSA notched two runs in the eighth. It all started with a McClure single to right field that got away from the right fielder, allowing him to reach third. Taussig then singled through the right side to score McClure. Detlefsen bunted, but an error by the pitcher allowed him to go to second and Taussig to third. Morresi then hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Taussig to score, putting UTSA up 7-4.

Owens’ night finished to start the eighth. He finished with 7.0 innings pitched, allowing four hits with two. ECU added two runs on back-to-back RBI singles to cut the UTSA lead to 7-6.

ECU was able to come back in the bottom of the ninth by hitting a two-RBI single, ending the game 8-7.
