DENTON, Texas – The UTSA softball team suffered a pair of defeats at the hands of North Texas across an American Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday at Lovelace Stadium.
The Roadrunners (15-22, 2-13 The American) fell to the Mean Green (28-12, 10-5 The American) twice and will look to bounce back on Wednesday, with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch against Baylor at Getterman Stadium in Waco, Texas.
Game One
UNT picked up a 12-4 run-rule victory in game one, with freshman Ava Eldridge (4-4) getting tagged with the loss and Anneca Anderson (11-3) earning a win.
A solo home run for sophomore Kalee Rochinski put UTSA on the board in the top of the second, and the squad posted a trio of runs in the fourth. Senior Jaylen Prichard singled to open the inning, and a Rochinski double followed. From there, junior Katia Reyes sliced a single through the left side, and a miscue allowed Rochinski and Prichard to come across. Senior Lindsey Davis then worked an RBI groundout, plating Reyes to issue a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, UNT managed its first run of the ballgame, trimming the deficit to three. They then rallied for four runs in the fifth, snagging a 5-4 advantage in the process.
The Mean Green exploded for seven more in the bottom of the sixth to cement a 12-4 victory.
Game Two
UNT picked up their second run-rule victory of the day via a 12-3 win that saw sophomore Meredith Schmitt (4-4) get the loss and Shelby Buffington (1-0) earn the win.
Senior Camryn Robillard led the team at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double and a pair of RBIs, while Prichard joined her in driving in a run.
The Mean Green jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first and three more runs in the second put them up 9-0.
In the top of the third, Robillard and freshman Sabrina Wick posted back-to-back singles before an RBI groundout by Prichard saw a 9-1 score line.
Senior Crislyne Moreno singled, and junior Madison Hornback walked in the fourth ahead of a Robillard double that scored the pair and pulled UTSA within six.
UNT replied with three in the home half, working a 12-3 edge that halted the contest early.
