SAN ANTONIO – The Bexar County Commissioners Court on Tuesday issued a proclamation designating March 1 as “UTSA Women’s Basketball Day.” The day celebrates the success of the 2024-25 UTSA Women’s Basketball team, which on March 1, 2025, clinched sole possession of the American Athletic Conference regular-season championship, set a school record for wins in a season and set the all-time single-game attendance record with 2,250 fans.
The proclamation was made by Precinct 1 Commissioner Rebeca Clay-Flores. She was joined by County Judge Peter Sakai, Precinct 2 Commissioner Justin Rodriguez, Precinct 3 Commissioner Grant Moody and Precinct 4 Commissioner Tommy Calvert to commemorate the proclamation.
UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos, Associate Vice President for Community & Government Relations Albert Carrisalez and Head Women’s Basketball Coach Karen Aston represented UTSA, along with student-athletes from the 2024-25 women’s basketball team and members of the UTSA Athletics staff.
The proclamation reads:
WHEREAS, The UTSA Women’s Basketball team claimed the 2025 American Athletic Conference Regular-Season Championship outright on March 1 with a 17-1 league record, marking the first AAC team championship for any Roadrunners squad since joining the American Athletic Conference on July 1, 2023 and;
WHEREAS, the UTSA Women’s Basketball team set a school record for wins in a season with 26 victories in the 2024-25 campaign, finishing with a 26-5 overall record, and recording the best start in program history at 17-2 and;
WHEREAS, Head Coach Karen Aston, in her fourth season at the helm of the UTSA Women’s Basketball team, was named the 2025 American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and;
WHEREAS, seniors Jordyn Jenkins and Nina De Leon Negron served as outstanding leaders for their team with Jenkins earning AAC Player of the Year honors and De Leon Negron being recognized as AAC Newcomer of the Year and;
WHEREAS, the UTSA Women’s Basketball team made its second consecutive postseason appearance, marking just the second back-to-back postseason berths in the program’s history and;
WHEREAS, the San Antonio community embraced the UTSA Women’s Basketball team, helping it set both a single-season attendance record with 15,372 total fans - an average of 1,182 fans per game - and a single-game attendance record with 2,250 fans on March 1 vs. Florida Atlantic.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Bexar County Commissioners Court hereby recognizes the 2024-25 UTSA Women’s Basketball team for its outstanding accomplishments and proclaim March 1 as UTSA Women’s Basketball Day.
