SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will travel to Sarasota, Florida, to compete in the American Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship, which will be contested on Monday-Wednesday, April 21-23, at Ritz-Carlton Members Club (par 72/7,292 yards).
The Roadrunners will travel a lineup consisting of Logan Zurn, Brayden Bare, Jack Wehman, Logan Vargas and Walker Franklin with Jacob King serving as the alternate.
UTSA will play against Charlotte, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Memphis, North Texas, Rice, South Florida, Temple, UAB and Wichita State.
The field will play 18 holes with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. CT each day.
ESPN+ will air live coverage of Wednesday’s final round. Sean Salisbury, Joe Cowart and Maria Trivelpiece will call the action.
This will mark the Roadrunners’ second appearance in the American Athletic Conference Championship after the school joined the league on July 1, 2023. UTSA placed 12th last year behind a trio of Roadrunners who tied for 29th, including Wehman.
In its conference tournament history — which dates back to the 1987 Trans America Athletic Conference (now Atlantic Sun) Tournament — UTSA has placed in the top five 19 times, including in three of its last five league championship appearances. The Roadrunners own six conference runner-up finishes, including twice in the last half dozen years, as they advanced to the Conference USA Championship Match in both 2019 and 2022.
Two Roadrunners have claimed individual league titles. Magnus Dohlvik recorded a 70-72-77—219 in 1997 to win the Southland Conference crown, while John Elizondo was the Southland's medalist in 2006 after carding a 67-71-75—213.
UTSA is coming off an 11th-place showing at The Aggie Invitational last weekend in Bryan, Texas. Bare finished in a tie for ninth place with a 5-over-par 221 (76-71-74) to notch his top career individual finish in a team event and his second top 10 of the spring season.
Zurn owns the top scoring average on the team’s lineup this week with a 74.22 mark. The junior from Grapevine, Texas, owns seven par-or-better rounds, including three 69s, this season. His top finish of 16th came after he fired a 4-under 212 (72-71-69) at the Desert Intercollegiate earlier this spring.
Bare boasts a 75.29 stroke average and a trio of par-or-better scorecards during his redshirt sophomore campaign. The Waco native’s top 54-hole total was his 5-over 221 in his last outing, good for his second top-10 showing in the last three events, as he tied for sixth at the All-American Individual in March.
Wehman has charted a 75.39 scoring mark and six par-or-better rounds this season. The Austin native logged his best finish by tying for 12th at the All-American Intercollegiate with an even-par 216 (71-74-71).
Vargas totes a 75.44 stroke average and four par-or-better scorecards during his junior season. The Lubbock native registered his top finish of 36th in each of the last two tournaments, while his best 54-hole tally of 218 (69-78-71) was registered at the Trinity Forest Invitational last fall.
Franklin has recorded a 76.0 scoring mark and four par-or-better rounds during his final campaign. The Colorado native’s top finish was a tie for 32nd at the Vaqueros Intercollegiate earlier this spring, while his best 54-hole total of 218 was posted while tying for 43rd at the Desert Intercollegiate.
King has tallied a 76.78 stroke average and a pair of top-20 finishes this spring. He tied for 10th with a 221 (76-73-72) at the OU Spring Indy and grabbed a share of 16th with a 228 (76-77-75) at the All-American Individual.
