SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team suffered a 9-4 defeat at the hands of Charlotte in the second game of an American Athletic Conference series at Daughtridge Stadium on Friday.
The Roadrunners (18-27, 4-16 The American) fell to the 49ers (24-24, 12-8 The American), as freshman Ava Eldridge (5-8) got tagged with the loss and Aubrey Yarnall (9-9) earned the win. The two teams will meet once more for a rubber match on Saturday with an 11 a.m. first pitch.
Senior Crislyne Moreno and junior Madison Hornback each launched home runs in the effort, while freshman Sabrina Wick picked up an RBI.
The 49ers jumped out in front, plating three in the bottom of the first. Moreno trimmed the deficit to two with a solo home run in the top of the second, and moments later, Hornback blasted a two-run bomb over the wall in left to tie things up.
Charlotte regained the lead in the home half, scoring two to go up. 5-3. The back-and-forth battle continued into the third, with a junior Katia Reyes double and a Wick RBI pulling the ‘Runners within one.
The 49ers tacked on two in the bottom of the frame, and added another in the fourth to take an 8-4 lead into the fifth. One more insurance run came in the sixth, and UTSA was unable to spark a comeback, falling 9-4.
