BRYAN, Texas — Brayden Bare has a share of 12th place and UTSA is in 10th after the opening day of The Aggie Invitational, which teed off Saturday at Traditions Club (par 72/7,227 yards).
Bare is part of a three-way tie for 12th at 3-over-par 147 through 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament. The redshirt sophomore carded rounds of 76 and 71 to earn a deadlock with Oklahoma’s Drew Goodman — the 53rd-ranked player nationally — and Baylor’s Drew Wrightson, one shot out of the top 10 and six strokes off the pace of 3-under set by Texas A&M’s Phichaksn Maichon.
Bare’s opening-round scorecard featured four birdies, as he wrote down a three on the 429-yard third, a four on the 584-yard eighth, a three on the 381-yard 13th and a four on the 551-yard 15th holes. The Waco native registered a five-shot improvement during his afternoon tour of the course with his third 1-under 71 of the season that included six birdies. He logged back-to-back birdies on Nos 2-3 and added a third on the front with his second birdie of the day on No. 8. His back nine was highlighted by circled numbers on three of his last four holes, including a three on the 444-yard 18th. He has tallied a tournament-high 10 birdies through the first two rounds.
Meanwhile, the Roadrunners are in 10th in the team race with a 617 (305-312), just one shot behind Rice, two ahead of Tarleton and 19 clear of Louisiana Tech. No. 19 Texas A&M leads the field with a 573 followed by sixth-ranked Oklahoma (580), Louisiana (589), Baylor (595) and Sam Houston (595) in the top five.
Logan Vargas is tied for 38th with a 153 after posting rounds of 74 and 79 behind 10 total birdies on the day. Jacob King is tied for 52nd (76-81—157), while Walker Franklin and Jack Wehman round out the UTSA lineup in 66th (79-82—161) and 72nd (85-81—166), respectively.
The final round is set for Sunday.
