'Runners to host Blazers in conference play

UTSA and UAB will meet thrice on the weekend

SAN ANTONIO—The UTSA softball team is set to host UAB across a three-game American Athletic Conference series, beginning Friday at 6 p.m. with a Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans presented by USAA. Competition continues with Little League Day on Saturday at 2 p.m. and will conclude with Alumni Day on Sunday at 1 p.m., presented by Wendy's.

The Roadrunners (15-23, 2-13 The American) will look to avoid a five-game skid after falling to Baylor last time out. Freshman Ava Eldridge got tagged with the loss despite allowing just one earned run over five innings of work, while senior Jaylen Prichard and classmate Crislyne Moreno each logged hits.

The Blazers (17-22, 6-9 The American) split a doubleheader with Auburn on Wednesday and enter the weekend sitting eighth in the AAC standings, two spots above UTSA.

The squad excels at small ball, with 37 sacrifice bunts ranking seventh across the NCAA, and 15 triples on the year are ninth. Defensively, UAB maintains a .970 fielding percentage, which is the second-best in the conference and 53rd nationally

Individually, Lindsey Smith tops the conference doubles leader board with 11 two-baggers on the year, and Bella Wiggins' 53 hits are third. Wiggins boasts a .424 AVG and is the toughest player to strike out in the league. Hannah Miles, meanwhile, is slotted 14th across the country with five triples.

The pitching staff holds a 4.78 ERA, with Caroline McLendon pacing the team with eight wins. Not far behind. Tait Davidson has seven victories on the season, with Caitlin Russell and Olivia Cummings each winning one.
