Roadrunners wrap up regular season with 67-48 victory over ECU

Redshirt senior Jordyn Jenkins posted 26 points in the win

GREENVILLE, N.C.—Redshirt senior Jordyn Jenkins tallied 26 points and six rebounds as the UTSA women’s basketball team worked a 67-48 victory over East Carolina at Minges Coliseum in what represented the final contest of the American Athletic Conference’s regular-season

The Roadrunners (26-3, 17-1 The American) took down the Pirates (16-14, 8-10 The American) after already securing the regular-season title and a No. 1 seed in the American Women’s Championship. The win for the ‘Runners stretched their league total to 17, tying the program record from the 2002-03 season that saw the squad go 17-3.

In addition to Jenkins, sophomore Idara Udo was stellar, scoring 13 with 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Graduate student Nina De Leon Negron charted 12 points with four rebounds and three assists, while junior Maya Linton swiped a pair of steals.

Jenkins scored eight in a stretch that saw UTSA jump out to a 10-0 lead in the first. The Pirates got a bucket with under three minutes in the period, as a triple halted the Roadrunner surge. Linton got a shot to fall, and ECU knocked down another from beyond the arc, working a 12-6 score line. A junior Sidney Love layup then wrapped up the frame, sending the squads into the second with UTSA up, 14-6.

The ’Runners opened the second with a 9-0 streak, featuring eight points by Jenkins that resulted in a 23-6 advantage. The Pirates broke the streak, but UTSA picked up right where they left off as a Rowe layup sparked another 6-0 rally, ahead of a 34-11 halftime lead.

Back-to-back triples for Jenkins and De Leon Negron saw a 44-18 edge in the third, and UTSA carried a 53-29 lead into the final frame.

ECU threatened a comeback in the fourth until a 7-0 streak that was capped off with an Udo layup built a 64-41 lead the Pirates could not recover from.=

UTSA will now turn its attention toward the American Women’s Basketball Championships, which span Sunday through Wednesday at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
