SAN ANTONIO – On Saturday, the UTSA softball team suffered a 14-3 run rule defeat at the hands of Florida Atlantic in American Athletic Conference play at Roadrunner Field.
The Roadrunners (14-18, 2-9 The American) couldn’t overcome the Owls (31-5, 10-1 The American), with sophomore Meredith Schmitt (4-3) getting tagged with the loss and Gabby Sacco (6-1) earning the win.
Senior Camryn Robillard provided a bright spot for UTSA, as she drove in a pair of runs, while redshirt freshman Makayla Madrid joined her in logging an RBI.
Florida Atlantic got on the board quickly, plating three runs in the top of the first. UTSA trimmed their deficit to two in the home half, as freshman Sabrina Wick was walked, swiped second, and came home on a fielder choice groundout.
The Owls tacked on five in the third and six in the fourth to build a 14-1 advantage.
Looking to avoid the run rule, Madrid legged out an infield single, ahead of base hits for junior Katia Reyes and classmate Madison Hornback, that loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth. Robillard stepped up and crushed one off the outfield wall to plate a pair. However, UTSA could not push any more runs across, halting the contest in the fifth with a 14-3 score line.
The ‘Runners and Owls will wrap up the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
