UTSA scores 12 runs to defeat Texas State

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA defeated Texas State 12-9 in a Tuesday night battle on Mar. 25 at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas. UTSA improves to 20-7 on the year. With 1,457 people in attendance, the Roadrunners set a new attendance record at Roadrunner Field.

UTSA was able to score first in the bottom of the first as Mason Lytle led the inning off with a walk. He was advanced to second on a ground out. Drew Detlefsen was able to put Lytle 90 feet away on a fly out to right field. Cade Sadler then hit a chopper to the third baseman, who then threw it away, allowing Lytle to score.

In the second inning, the Roadrunners scored four runs to take a 5-0 lead. UTSA found itself with bases loaded thanks to two hit-by-pitches and a walk. Detlefsen picked up three RBIs on a double to right center scoring all three runners. Andrew Stucky then drove in Detlefsen to put the Roadrunners up 5-0.

In the fourth, Detlefsen led the inning off with a double. He was then brought home by Stucky double giving UTSA a 6-0 lead.

UTSA was able to take a 10-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth. After back-to-back walks, Detlefsen was able to grab two more RBIs on a double down the left-field line scoring both Lytle and Norris McClure.

After two consecutive walks, UTSA had bases loaded once again. A wild pitch would bring home Detlefsen. Caden Miller drove in the Roadrunners’ fourth run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Sadler.

Starting pitcher Gunnar Brown shined tonight as he threw five scoreless innings, only giving up two walks and two hits with seven strikeouts to his name. He was able to do all that on just 82 pitches.

In the top of the seventh, Texas State cut the UTSA lead to 10-3 on a solo homer and a two-run home run. The Bobcats kept fighting as they were able to add two runs in the eighth on an RBI single and an RBI double.

In the bottom half of the eighth, Detlefsen picked up his sixth and seventh RBIs on a single up the middle to score McClure, who reached on an error, and Lytle, who reached on a single. In the top of the ninth, Texas State threatened by scoring one run on a fielder’s choice and an error, then a three-run homer to make the ballgame 12-9.

- UTSA turned two double plays tonight, it was their third time this season turning multiple double plays in a game.
