UTSA falls to Charlotte in game one of series

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —  The Roadrunners fall to Charlotte 3-2 in the first American Athletic Conference game of the year on Friday, Mar. 21, at Hayes Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.

THE BASICS:
Score: UTSA 3, Charlotte 2
Records: UTSA (17-7) (0-1), Charlotte (11-9) (1-0)

Win: Zach Royse (1-3) | Loss: Blake Gillespie (2-3)

The Roadrunners were able to score first in the third inning, all thanks to Andrew Stucky, who hit a solo home run to left center, traveling 405 feet. Charlotte was able to capitalize on an UTSA error scoring one run to tie it up, then another on a sacrifice fly in the third.

After a scoreless fourth and fifth innings, Mason Lytle was able to tie the ball game as he hit an inside-the-park home run through the right side of the infield to tie the game at 2-2. Charlotte answered the run with one of their own as they led the sixth inning off with a solo homer.

Despite the loss, starting pitcher Zach Royse dealt as he threw for seven innings, striking out nine batters in the process, only allowing two earned runs and five hits. Connor Kelley came into relief in the top of the eighth, facing four batters, allowing one hit while striking out one Charlotte batter.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Royse threw a season-long 7.0 innings pitched and a season-high 109 pitches.
- With nine k’s on the night Royse tied a career-high which was set against Texas Southern.
- Stucky recorded a home run and a double for his fifth multi-hit game of the season.
- Ty Hodge had two singles on the night for his sixth two-hit game and eighth multi-hit game.
