SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men’s and women’s track and field teams opened the outdoor portion of the 2025 campaign on Friday at the Park West Athletic Complex, kicking off the UTSA invitational with a field event-heavy day of competition. Among six UTSA medalists, Nyaluet Diew paced the Roadrunners with the shot put gold.
Coming down the stretch on the opening day of the UTSA Invitational, Diew joined the Roadrunners from Arkansas State this season – the sophomore originally hails from South Sioux City, Nebraska. Diew has already set a new indoor shot put mark at UTSA and on Friday she shot to second on the UTSA outdoor all-time list with an outdoor-debut of 15.74m (51-7.75) to win the event by .22 meters. In the hammer throw, she also placed 11th with a measurement of 41.31m (135-6.00).
Claiming the top collegiate spot behind unattached Victor Perez, UIW grad transfer Garrett Stokes took the overall silver with a toss of 58.28m (191-2) that places him fifth all-time at UTSA and outdistanced the next collegiate competitor by 3.68m. In the shot put, Stokes also chalked up a fifth-place 16.72m (54-10.25) measurement, ahead of senior Paul Bouey in sixth at 16.40m (53-9.75) and rookie Ryan Stillman in tenth at 14.45m (47-5.00).
The Roadrunners also performed well as a unit in the women’s long jump, with senior Oreoluwa Adamson cutting within .02m of her career outdoor best, earning second place on a leap of 6.27m (20-6.75), edging out sophomore Edlin Laur in third at 6.14m (20-1.75), while senior Dahlia Barnes was fifth at a career-best 5.93m (19-5.50).
Kicking off the meet with the men’s javelin, freshman Harry Jääger was 10th with a 46.16m (151-5) debut throw. On the women’s side, Laur was eighth on a 34.78m (114-1.00) toss into the wind, while sophomore Mia Lien went 27.62m (90-7.00).
Winding down the night with the meet’s first running events, senior OJ Ruiz collected the bronze in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on a career-first 9:56.21, while freshman Diego Ramirez followed in fourth at 10:25.10. The women’s 5,000-meter was a UTSA heavy field, as senior Brooke Veltman was third behind a pair of Texas A&M runners at 19:18.10, leading five more consecutive Roadrunners, Itzel Rojo (19:34.21) in fourth, Jadyn Gonzales (20:04.41) in fifth, Emma Wallace (20:28.82) in sixth, Aubry Ybarra (21:06.37) in seventh and Estefania Colchado (21:28.22) in eighth.
The Roadrunners will return to competition on Saturday morning at Park West, opening day two of the UTSA Invitational at 11 a.m. with the pole vault, followed on a rolling schedule by the high jump, triple jump and discus. Track events begin competition at 2 p.m. with the 4x100-meter relays, then 100/110-meter hurdles, 400-meter, 100-meter, 800-meter, 400-meter hurdles, 200-meter, 1,500-meter and closing up competition with the 4x400-meter relays.
