UTSA signs Sam Acharya

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head men’s golf coach Matt Wernecke announced that the program has signed Sam Acharya, the top-ranked amateur golfer in Nepal.

“We are thrilled to add Sam to the roster,” Wernecke said. “He is a proven winner and has the ability to post low numbers. We look forward to having him on campus in the fall.”

No. 1-ranked amateur golfer in Nepal … owns numerous victories during his career … captured the 2025 Bangladesh Amateur Golf Championship with a 291 (69-69-80-73), becoming the first Nepali player to win that title … won the U21 title at the Faldo Junior Tour European Grand Final … secured back-to-back wins at the FJT Nepal Championship in 2024 and 2025, carding a 202 (69-67-66) at the latest event … earned top honors at the 2024 Surya Nepal Kathmandu Open … fired a 14-under-par 274 for a seven-shot victory at the 2024 Surya Nepal Tour Championship … became the youngest winner on the Surya Nepal Golf Tour when he won the 2023 Surya Nepal Challenge at the age of 16 years and 10 months with a 3-under 269 (69-66-70-64) …  helped Nepal claim gold in the team event at the Bangladesh Amateur Golf Championship in 2022, 2023 and 2025 … picked up a team gold and individual silver at the 2022 National Games … won more than a dozen events in 2021 including the Gokarna Nepal Amateur Open … medalist at the 2019 Faldo Series Nepal Championship … first name is Sadbhav but goes by Sam … father, Deepak Acharya, is a former national golfer and currently the general secretary of Nepal Golf Association and senior director of Gokana Golf Club.
