INDIANAPOLIS— For the second consecutive season, the UTSA women's basketball team will compete in a national postseason tournament, with the squad receiving an automatic berth into the Women's Basketball Invitational Tournament (WBIT). UTSA is set to take on Gonzaga in the First Round at 8 pm. CT on Thursday, Mar. 20 in Spokane, Washington.
This will be UTSA's fourth time playing in a postseason tournament and its first appearance in the WBIT after previously competing in the WNIT in 2024, and making the NCAA Tournament following Southland Conference Tournament Championships in 2008 and 2009. UTSA picked up its first-ever postseason victory last year, taking down Northern Colorado in the Convocation Center, before falling to Wyoming in the Second Round of the WNIT.
The selection comes after a historic season that's seen the squad compile a 26-4 record, including a 17-1 mark in conference play and an American Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship. UTSA's win total and conference win total both represent program records, and the Runners have also gone 13-0 at home, finishing undefeated for the first time since the 1984-85 campaign, which saw the squad go 9-0 in the Convocation Center.
ABOUT THE WBIT
In its second year of existence, the WBIT is owned and funded by the NCAA and the first four teams out of the NCAA DI women's basketball tournament — as determined by the DI women's basketball selection committee —receive an automatic bid into the WBIT and also receive the first four seeds. Regular season champions of DI conferences not otherwise selected for the NCAA DI women's basketball tournament also automatically qualify (if eligible and not reclassifying institutions). The remaining field will be made up of at-large teams chosen by the WBIT selection committee.
First, second and quarterfinal games will be held at campus sites. Action then moves to Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis for the semifinals and the championship.
All preliminary round games will be broadcasted live on ESPN+. The semifinal games will air on ESPNU and the championship game will be broadcasted live on ESPNU.
