COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The UTSA track and field teams turned in several blockbuster indoor performances on Saturday on the second day of competition at the Charlie Thomas Invitational in the oval at the R.A. "Murray" Fasken '38 indoor facility. In total, three individual Roadrunners walked away from the meet with new school indoor records, Mia Lien, Shadae Findley and Michael Campbell, while the women’s 4x400-meter relay squad also logged a new program best in winning their event.
The first record notch came on the opening event of the day, as Campbell hit a measurement of 20.30m (66-7.25) in the men’s weight throw, supplanting his own record by .01m while earning third place in the event.
Next to make her mark, Ims first tied the existing record from 2006 by Ryanne Dupree with an 8.49 60m hurdles clocking that advanced her through the semi-final. However, in her fourth-place finish during the final, she sliced big numbers to reach 8.41 seconds and secure the new school mark.
Findley snapped her own 400m record, setting the standard for the second time in as many performances, dropping another .69 seconds to reach 53.29 with the new school record with the fourth-place finish.
Ims and Findley both got another addition to the record book in the meet’s final event, but also added a gold medal, joining with Ibiso David-West and Ida Breigan to combine for a 3:39.18 in the 4x400m relay – topping the 2017 Conference USA Championships squad by 1.51 seconds.
That was Breigan’s second gold of the afternoon, after topping the women’s long jump field for her second meet victory of the season. Breigan matched her current season high of 6.50m (21-4), which already ranks 10th in the nation. A common theme for the Roadrunners; the top marks mostly belonged to the Orange and Blue, as Brina Likar claimed third on a 6.13m (20-1.5) measurement, Oreolewa Adamson was fourth at 6.06m (19-10.75) and Rachela Pace was fifth at 5.96m (19-6.75).
Pace also captured bronze in the triple jump with a 13.02m (42-8.75) leap. Meanwhile, Dylan James also tallied a third-place finish in the men’s triple jump, hitting 15.14m (49-8.25). Third place in the women’s shot put went to Nyaluet Diew, shoving for a 15.84m (51-11.75) measurement. In addition, Zane Hodges finished seventh in the men’s 60m hurdles final at 8.32 seconds and the men’s 4x400m relay of AJ Breault, Noah Rhodes, Matthew Mills and Charlie Staddon combined for a 3:17.36 to finish fourth in the 4x4 Invite race.
Next week the Roadrunners will split ranks, with one party traveling to Houston for the Howie Ryan Invitational on Friday, Feb. 14, while another will head to Nashville for the two-day Indoor Music City Challenge at Vanderbilt, Feb. 14-15.
