CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The UTSA softball team fell 7-2 at the hands of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday in nonconference action at Chapman Field.
The Roadrunners (9-5) couldn't overcome the Islanders (5-10), as redshirt sophomore Madison Collins (0-2) was tagged with the loss, and Holly Ayala (1-1) earned the win.
Junior Katia Reyes provided a bright spot, working a pair of RBIs across a 2-for-3 afternoon. Senior Camryn Robillard joined her with multiple hits and sophomore Kalee Rochinski went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
UTSA threatened early, juicing the bases in the top of the first on a trio of walks with two outs. The threat, however, did not come to pass as the Islanders found the put-away pitch to escape unscathed.
TAMUCC plated three in the bottom of the second and added three more in the third to snag a 6-0 lead. UTSA got one back in the fourth, as back-to-back doubles for Robillard and Reyes pushed one across and trimmed their deficit to five.
A scoreless fifth followed, and Reyes picked up her second RBI of the afternoon in the sixth, knocking in Rochinski, who reached on a single and swiped second. The Islanders added two more insurance runs in the home half as they cemented the 7-2 victory.
UTSA is now set to host the Birds Up Bash from Friday through Sunday at Roadrunner Field, inviting Boise State, Le Moyne and Houston to San Antonio.
