PALM DESERT, Calif. — Kaelen Dulany is in a tie for fifth place and UTSA is in seventh after the second round of the Desert Intercollegiate on Tuesday at Classic Club (par 72/7,305 yards).
Dulany is one of six golfers with a share of fifth at 7-under-par 137, three shots off the pace set by Colorado Christian’s Sungyeop Cho with 18 holes left to play on Wednesday. In fact, his 137 matches the fourth-best 36-hole total ever posted by a Roadrunner.
Entering the day with a share of the lead after firing a 7-under 67, which is tied for the second-best score in program history, he posted a 72 that was highlighted by a trio of birdies. The sophomore from Keller, Texas, made a three on the 416-yard eighth and also circled his number on the 162-yard, par-3 12th and 560-yard, par-5 14th hole.
Meanwhile, David Martinez posted UTSA’s low round of the day with a 2-under 70 to help the Roadrunners register a 2-under 286 on Tuesday. UTSA is in seventh at 9-under par after posting a 281 in the opening round, six shots ahead of UC Riverside and only four strokes out of the top five.
Martinez is tied for 25th at 3-under par, as the true freshman from Houston opened the week with a 71 on Monday.
Logan Zurn also recorded a red number in the second round with a 1-under 71. The junior from Grapevine, Texas, logged five birdies on the day including back-to-back twice on Nos. 2-3 and 14-15. After turning in a 72 on Monday, he has a share of 36th at 1-under 143.
Walker Franklin contributed the fourth counting score for UTSA with a 73 that featured four birdies. The senior from Colorado is tied for 49th after also registering a 1-over scorecard in the opening round.
Brayden Bare rounds out the lineup in a tie for 66th (74-75—149), while Jack Wehman has a share of 36th at 1-under 143 (70-73).
Colorado Christian — the reigning NCAA Division II national champions — leads the 15-team field at 24-under par, followed by No. 37 Charlotte (-21), California Baptist (-15), Coastal Carolina (-13) and host Wyoming (-13).
The final round is slated for Wednesday.
