‘Runners fall to Bearkats in Roadrunner Classic finale

UTSA will now visit TAMUCC for a midweek bout before hosting the Birds Up Bash

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team suffered a 5-0 setback at the hands of Sam Houston on Sunday in what represented the Roadrunner Classic finale at Roadrunner Field.

The Roadrunners (9-4) fell to the Bearkats (7-6), with sophomore Meredith Schmitt (3-1) being dealt her first loss of the season while Abigail Young (1-1) worked the win.

Schmitt allowed a pair of earned runs with five strikeouts across the first 5.2 innings, while freshman Sabrina Wick, senior Jaylen Prichard, redshirt freshman Makayla Madrid, and sophomore Madison Lenton all logged hits.

Schmitt kept SHSU off the scoreboard through the first three frames before a Roadrunner miscue led to a 2-0 Bearkat lead.

A pair of singles in the top of the sixth put a pair ahead of a base knock and a throwing error that pushed across SHSU’s third run of the day.

Two more insurance runs came in the seventh, resulting in a 7-0 Bearkat edge, and as the ‘Runners looked to rally, Lenton belted a leadoff double in the home half. She, however, was unable to advance as SHSU secured the victory with a trio of outs.

UTSA will now visit Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday at 3 p.m. before hosting the Birds Up Bash from Friday through Sunday at Roadrunner Field.
