UTSA throttles LIU for series sweep

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — UTSA completes the sweep, beating LIU in both games of a doubleheader 15-0 and 7-1 on Sunday, Feb. 22 at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio to improve to 5-3 on the season.

GAME 1
THE BASICS:
Score: UTSA 15, LIU 0 (7 Inn.)
Records: UTSA (4-3), LIU 2-5
Location: Roadrunner Field
Win: Conor Myles (1-0) | Loss: Justin DeCastro (0-1)

The Roadrunners’ bats stayed awake in this morning showdown as they were able to put up three runs in the first inning. Andrew Stucky got it going for the Roadrunners as he doubled down the left-field line to score Norris McClure and Caden Miller. Tye Odom finished out the scoring in the inning on an RBI single to score Stucky.

In the bottom of the second, T. Hodge homered to left field, his first of the year to put UTSA up 4-0. UTSA added another run due to a throwing error to have a 5-0 lead. Odom came up big at the plate again as he hit a two-RBI single, putting UTSA up 7-0.

In the third, Mason Lytle singled to center field, scoring the Hodge brothers, Nathan and T. Hodge. In the fourth, the Roadrunners scored their lowest amount of runs in an inning this game with just an RBI single by N. Hodge.

In the fifth, Drew Detlefsen singled up the middle to score freshman Jordan Ballin. The runs kept coming as T. Hodge reached on an error, scoring Odom and Detlefsen to put the Roadrunners up 13-0.

Odom continued his tear at the plate in the sixth inning as he managed to double to left field to score Ballin and Mason Jacob.

The southpaw, Conor Myles, got the start in this game, he threw a total of six innings, giving up just five hits and one walk while striking out seven batters. Christian Okerholm made his first appearance with the Roadrunners striking out two of the three batters he faced in the top of the seventh.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
-Tye Odom went 4-5 on the day with five RBIs for his first four-hit game of the season, he is also the only Roadrunner to record five RBIs in a single game.
-Ty Hodge went 3-for-4, recording his first home run of the season.
-The Roadrunners’ 15 runs and 19 hits are both season highs.  
-Myles has now started two games, tossing a total of 10.1 innings he has yet to give up a run.

GAME 2
THE BASICS:
Score: UTSA 7, LIU 1(7 Inn.)
Records: UTSA (5-3), LIU 2-6
Location: Roadrunner Field
Win: Mike DeBattista (1-0) | Loss: RJ Latkowski (0-1)

The Roadrunners once again started the game off hot, scoring four runs in the first inning. McClure put the first run on the board on a sacrifice that scored Miller. Morresi followed that up with a single up the middle to score Lytle.  

With Morresi standing on first, Detlefsen homered to left field to put UTSA up 4-0 at the end of the first inning, his first of the year.

In the second inning, Miller hit his third home run of the season, which was a solo home run. In the third, Runners added one more run on a Ballin single that scored Detlefsen, putting the Roadrunners up 6-0. Lytle notched the Roadrunners’ final run of the series on a sacrifice fly, scoring T. Hodge.

LIU scored its first run of the day in the top of the seventh on an RBI double.

Mike DeBattista got the nod on the mound and threw four scoreless innings, giving up just five hits with one strikeout.

The game concluded after the top of the seventh due to a drop-dead time.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
-Kendall Dove threw two innings and only needed to see six batters, striking out one.
-Detlefsen had two RBIs in the second game of the doubleheader for his second multi-RBI game of the season.
-Six Roadrunners are currently on a minimum three-game hitting streak, with Detlefsen recording a hit in the last seven games.
-The UTSA pitching staff holds an ERA of 3.71 after holding LIU scoreless in two of the four games played in the series.
-UTSA is now outscoring its opponents with 51 runs to their 26.
-The Roadrunners are a perfect 4-0 at home.
-Miller leads the team in Slugging percentage (.800)

The Roadrunners will host Houston Christian in a mid-week bout at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas.
