UTSA in Golden State for Desert Intercollegiate

SAN ANTONIO — Coming off the top team finish of the season, UTSA is in California for the Desert Intercollegiate, which will be hosted by Wyoming on Monday-Wednesday, Feb. 24-26, at Classic Club (par 72/7,305 yards) in Palm Desert.

The Roadrunners will travel a lineup of Kaelen Dulany, Walker Franklin, David Martinez, Jack Wehman and Logan Zurn, while Brayden Bare will play as an individual.

UTSA will compete against No. 39 California Baptist, Cal State Fullerton, No. 37 Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, No. 34 Colorado, Colorado Christian, Drake, New Mexico, Northern Iowa, Tarleton, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, Utah Tech, and the host Cowboys.

The field will play 18 holes each day beginning with an 11 a.m. CT shotgun start on Monday. 

The Roadrunners last competed on Feb. 2-4 at the Vaqueros Intercollegiate in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Paced by a 10th-place finish from Martinez, UTSA placed fifth with an 887 (296-298-293) in the 15-team field.

Martinez, a freshman from Houston, fired a 2-over-par 218 (73-73-72) for his first career top 10, while Zurn grabbed a share of 23rd (73-72-79—224) to lead the Roadrunners to their second top-10 team showing of the campaign.

Dulany owns the top stroke average on the team with a 73.73 mark. The sophomore transfer registered his top finish of the season at The Clerico last October, tying for 17th.

Zurn, a junior transfer, ranks second on the squad with a 74.79 scoring mark after logging his best finish in the last event with Bare close behind with a 74.25 average.

Martinez has accumulated a 75.22 average through nine rounds, while Wehman (75.33) and Franklin (75.73) are close behind.

UTSA has played in the Desert Intercollegiate twice previously, placing 14th in 2009 and eighth in 2022.
