SAN ANTONIO—The UTSA softball team is set to host the 2025 Roadrunner Classic, which will run from Thursday through Sunday at Roadrunner Field. In addition to the 'Runners, UTSA will be joined by Akron, Michigan State, St. Thomas (MN), Sam Houston and Omaha for the event as they’ll open things up against the Spartans at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
The Roadrunners (7-3) are fresh off the Lion Classic, where they went 2-3 with victories over South Dakota and Mississippi Valley State along the way. Senior Jaylen Prichard posted a team-high .462 batting average, going 6-for-13 with a double. She drove in a pair of runs and walked three times for an OPS of 1.101. In the circle, sophomore Meredith Schmitt scattered three hits over 9.1 innings of work with four strikeouts and a pair of victories. She maintained a 0.75 ERA in four appearances and kept the opposition to a .0.94 batting average.
The Zips (7-4) will continue their Texas tour after going 3-2 at the Tarleton tournament and facing UIW and Texas in midweek games. Akron is led by Brooke Sivek, who owns a .424 batting average and a 1.010 OPS. Sydney Selker is not far behind, maintaining a .400 AVG with eight RBIs and 18 total bases. In the circle, Macy Walters owns a team-best 3-1 record with a save, while Madelyn Lee and Madie Jamrog each own multiple wins.
The Spartans (3-5) have wins over Western Michigan, Longwood and Western Carolina on the season, with Jacey Schuler logging all three victories, fanning 22 over 26.0 frames, and holding a squad-low 2.96 ERA. Kendall Smiley has gone 5-for-18 with a double and two triples en route to a .398 AVG, and Sydney Doloszycki has posted six RBIs for MSU.
The Tommies (5-5) enter at .500 on the campaign but had a rough go at last week's Texas State Tournament. St. Thomas went 1-4 with a lone win over New Mexico, falling to the hosts, the Lobos, Stephen F. Austin and Fordham. Five of their hitters boast batting averages over .400, led by Kaitlyn Raymond, who's driven in six runs with a .462 AVG and an OPS of 1.103. Four different pitchers have started games for the squad, and the staff owns a 4.85 ERA with a 1.75 WHIP.
Similarly, the Bearkats (5-5) have an even record and are coming off a 2-3 performance at the Louisiana Classic with wins against Northern Illinois and Louisiana. Brodie Quinlan paces the offense to the tune of a .444 AVG with four doubles, a triple, and a long ball on the year. She and Samantha Graeter are tied with a squad-leading six RBIs. The pitchers hold a stellar 2.68 ERA, as Amy Abke and Daniel Kendall both have a pair of wins.
The Mavericks (9-1) have been red-hot, with a loss only to Northern Iowa at the UNI Dome Tournament. They swept the FGCU Invitational last week, with victories over Wisconsin, Seton Hall and FGCU along the way. Maddie Groff has been lights out for Omaha, boasting a 0.69 WHIP and a 0.88 ERA. She's twirled four complete games, three of which were shutouts, en route to a 5-1 record. Alexis Wiggins and Alyson Edwards have both gone 2-0 this season. Sammy Schmidt has provided the bulk of the damage at the plate, with a whopping .480 AVG. Four-squad members have double-digit RBI totals, including Ava Rongisch, whose 13 paces the team.
