UTSA travels to face UT Arlington on Sunday

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men’s tennis team (1-1) is looking to build on the first victory of the Sasha Gozun era with a Sunday trek up I-35 to face UT Arlington (0-2) at the UTA Tennis Center. First serve in Arlington between the Roadrunners and Mavericks is set for 11 a.m. on Feb. 2.

About the Roadrunners
After opening at 14th-ranked Texas A&M in College Station, the Roadrunners toppled UT Rio Grande Valley last Saturday with a 4-0 victory at the UTSA Tennis Center. Senior Danijal Muminovic led the charge in securing the final win for the doubles point and collecting the first singles win, alongside singles victories for Santiago Flyckt and Oskar Grzegorzewski – who is 2-0 on the season with a victory at Texas A&M.

About the Mavericks
UT Arlington is 0-2 after opening the year against No. 10 Oklahoma and Pepperdine in Norman and then Dallas. Against Pepperdine, the Mavs did collect the doubles point on court two and three wins, with Pedro Sasso and Meethre Barot on two and Andres Medus and Mattia Ricci on three. So far, the Mavs are looking for their first singles win of the season after taking on elite competition. The Mavs return four players from last season – All-WAC first-teamer Medus, Barot, Sasso and Yazid Lahjomri – from a team that won both the WAC regular season and tournament championships.

Series with UT Arlington
UT Arlington and UTSA have a storied past in men’s tennis, meeting 47 times between 1987 and 2023 before renewing the series for the eighth time in the last nine years. UTSA trails in the series 17-30 but has won the last four meetings, including the 4-3 victory on Feb. 11, 2023 for the last trip to Arlington and last season’s 4-0 sweep last season in San Antonio.

Up Next
The Roadrunners’ schedule away from San Antonio starts to pick up next week, as UTSA travels to Eugene, Ore. to take on Denver first and then move on to host Oregon at the Ducks’ Student Tennis Center, playing back-to-back dates, Feb. 8 and Feb. 9.
