UTSA will look to extend its best start in program history

SAN ANTONIO—After going 5-0 to kick-start the 2025 campaign, the UTSA softball team will now focus on the Lion Classic, a three-day tournament beginning Friday in Hammond, Louisiana. Southeastern Louisiana will serve as the hosts, and as a part of the event, the ‘Runners will also face South Dakota and Mississippi Valley State.

For games on Friday and Sunday, live stats will be provided at http://www.lionsports.net/sidearmstats/softball, and a radio broadcast can be found at http://www.lionsports.net/ListenLive2.

UTSA will first face South Dakota on Friday at 1 p.m. before taking on the hosts at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, they’ll again meet South Dakota at 11 a.m., ahead of a 1 p.m. bout with Mississippi Valley State. The competition will conclude on Sunday with a noon showdown against Southeastern Louisiana.

The Roadrunners (5-0) went unscathed across the opening weekend, picking up victories over Weber State, SIUE, and UMass Lowell en route to a UTSA Invitational title. The squad is off to its best start in program history, thanks in large part to tremendous performances by junior Katia Reyes and redshirt freshman Makayla Madrid

Reyes was dominant in the circle, spinning 10 strikeouts and scattering six hits over 11.2 innings of action for a 0.60 ERA. She picked up two wins and a save on the weekend, with the highlight being a complete-game shutout over Weber State to secure the championship. She was two outs from a no-hitter against the Wildcats and also had a strong weekend at the plate, hitting .333 with a double, two walks, and two stolen bases.

Meanwhile, Madrid recorded a .462 batting average on a 6-for-13 weekend featuring three doubles, a home run, and a squad-high eight RBIs. In total, she worked a 1.456 OPS across the tournament.

The Lady Lions (2-3) picked up wins over Charlotte and Central Arkansas at the 2025 Tiger Classic, narrowly falling to No. 10 LSU, 3-2, along the way. Shelby Morris worked a .417 AVG to top the team in the opening weekend, and Chloe Magee was not far behind at .400 AVG with a double and two RBIs. Nobody on the team drove in as many runs as Maria Detillier, who logged six RBIs. Macie Larue took command, boasting a 0.60 ERA and going 2-0 across a pair of complete games.

The Coyotes (3-1) were victorious against Texas Southern, East Texas A&M and Stephen F. Austin at the East Texas A&M Leadoff last week, with a lone loss against the host school. Tatum Villotta got the job done at the plate, going 6-for-12, and Autumn Iversen smacked a home run and posted four RBIs. Ciara Edwards went 2-0 with a save in the circle, fanned 12 and scattered nine hits over 13.2 innings of action. McKenna Young joined her in logging a win at the tournament.

The Devilettes (1-3) earned a win over Arlington Baptist while falling to Alcorn State, Jackson State, and Grambling at the Jackson State Tournament last time out. Despite the results, Breeauna Troup shined for the squad with a 1.056 OPS, with Aulora Edwards and Hillary Victor joining her in holding a batting average over .300. Madison Brice did the bulk of the work in the circle, twirling 19.1 innings with 16 strikeouts, a complete game and a 1-2 record.
