SAN ANTONIO — UTSA is set to open the spring season with the Puerto Rico Classic, which will be hosted by Purdue at Grand Reserve Golf Club (par 72/6,305 yards) on Sunday-Tuesday, Feb. 2-4, in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
The Roadrunners will travel a lineup of Daniela Abonce, Maria Bastarrica, Morgan Ellison, Lauren Rios and Olivia Williams for the program’s maiden voyage to the Island of Enchantment.
UTSA will compete against Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia Southern, Furman, Iowa State, Kansas State, Kent State, LSU, Michigan State, Minnesota, North Florida, North Texas, Northwestern, Ole Miss, UNCW, Vanderbilt and the host Boilermakers.
The field will play 18 holes each day.
Under the direction of head coach Summer Batiste, UTSA recorded three top-five team finishes during the fall campaign. The Roadrunners opened their eighth season with Batiste at the helm by placing third at the Badger Invitational, and they also finished fourth at the Diane Thomason Invitational and tied for fifth at the Dale McNamara Invitational.
Individually, Abonce paces the squad with a 74.0 stroke average during her 15 fall rounds. The junior from Mexico turned in her top finish of the season by tying for third at the Badger Invitational with a 1-over-par 217. The reigning American Athletic Conference Champion closed out the fall with a season-low 67 en route to a 16th-place showing at the Jim West Challenge.
Ellison owns UTSA’s second-best scoring average with a 74.93 mark through 15 rounds. The senior out of Peachtree City, Georgia, placed in the top 30 in all five fall tournaments and capped the season with an even-par 216 (72-72-72) to tie for 27th at the Jim West Challenge.
Williams will carry a 75.2 average into the spring. The junior from England turned in the top finish of her UTSA career at the Diane Thomason Invitational in Iowa City, tying for fifth place with a 225 (70-74-81).
Bastarrica has played in all five events so far in 2024-25 and owns a 77.0 average. The sophomore from Spain posted her top finish of the year with a tie for 25th at the Diane Thomas Invitational.
Rios will be making her first appearance of the season. The Coppell, Texas, native last competed for the Roadrunners at the 2023 Conference USA Championship.
