SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will tee off its spring season at the Vaqueros Intercollegiate, which will be hosted by UTRGV on Sunday-Tuesday, Feb. 2-4, at Playa Paraiso Golf Club (par 72/6,701 yards) in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.
The Roadrunners will bring a lineup consisting of Brayden Bare, Kaelen Dulany, David Martinez, Logan Vargas and Logan Zurn, while Walker Franklin will play as an individual.
UTSA will compete against Abilene Christian, Cal Baptist, Denver, Lamar, North Texas, Northern Colorado, Seton Hall, SMU, ULM, UT Arlington, UTEP, Western Carolina, Wichita State and the host Vaqueros.
The field will play 18 holes each day with a shotgun start scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Central time all three days.
This will mark the program’s second-ever visit to Mexico for a tournament. UTSA played in the 1989 UTPA Invitational in Monterrey.
The Roadrunners are coming off a fall slate that was highlighted by a seventh-place finish at the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational last October in Mississippi.
Dulany led the team in scoring average last fall with a 73.25 mark. The sophomore transfer from Keller, Texas, posted a pair of top-25 finishes, including a tie for 17th at The Clerico after he carded a 219 (76-73-70).
Zurn owns the second-best stroke average at 74.82. The junior out of Grapevine, Texas, placed 27th in back-to-back events to close out the fall including at the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational, where he fired a season-best 219 (77-69-73).
Vargas is just behind Zurn with a 74.83 average. The junior from Lubbock logged his top finish of 43rd after he fired a 218 (69-78-71) at the Trinity Forest Invitational.
Bare, a redshirt sophomore who hails from Waco, saw action in the final three fall tournaments and has posted a 75.11 stroke average this season.
Franklin, a senior from Colorado, boasts a 75.75 average and a top finish of 45th at the Fallen Oak, where he carded a 224 (79-73-72), while Martinez has tallied a 76.5 mark through six rounds during his true freshman campaign.
