SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's basketball team is back in the Convocation Center on Wednesday, where they'll meet Rice at 6:30 p.m. in a Salute to Armed Forces contest, presented by USAA, the Official Military Appreciation Partner of UTSA Athletics.
The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Karl Schoening (play-by-play), Carlie Heineman (analyst) and Taylor Guajardo (reporter) on the call. Neal Raphael will deliver all the action on the radio in the greater San Antonio area on The Bull 93.3 FM and worldwide on the iHeartRadio app.
The Roadrunners (12-2, 3-0 The American) took down Tulsa, 60-53, last time out, collecting their 12th win of the season, and a 12-2 record reflects the program's best-ever through 14 games. UTSA is also 3-0 in league action for the first time since the 2009-10 squad accomplished the feat in the Southland, and the win over the Golden Hurricane was the 50th of Head Coach Karen Aston's tenure.
After the hot start to the campaign, Aston was named the Week 9 WHoopDirt.com DI Coach of the Week, and she wasn't the only 'Runner to receive recognition as redshirt senior Jordyn Jenkins was named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the third time this season.
She averaged 23.0 PPG at a 53.3% clip across wins over UAB and Tulsa, recording 14 rebounds and four blocks. She tied her season-high with 30 points against the Golden Hurricane, and her average of 19.5 on the season is 30th in the NCAA and first in The American. Jenkins has posted 273 total points, which is 32nd nationally, and 64 free throws are 39th. Defensively, she's been creeping up the league's blocking leader board as 19 on the year are third.
Graduate Student Nina De Leon Negron sits atop the conference assists per game ladder with 5.2 APG, ranking 38th in the country, and 68 total assists are 56th. As a team, UTSA is 13th in rebound margin, collecting 11.3 more than the opposition, is 32nd in field goal defense, holding opponents to 36.0%, and a 54.7 scoring defense is 17th.
The Owls (8-6, 1-1 The American) were idle this past week and split their first two conference contests, falling to South Florida, 74-64, before besting Tulane, 72-64.
Rice excels at grabbing defensive boards, collecting 28.4 per game for the 37th-most in the nation. They also lead The Americans in turnovers per game, committing 15.3, and have an assist/turnover ratio of 1.02, which is also first. 15.6 assists per game are second in the league, and 22.5 points from their bench are second as well.
Malia Fisher leads the Owls in scoring with 12.5 PPG, and Dominique Ennis is not far behind at 11.6. Hailey Adams commands the boards with 8.0 RPG, while 40 assists and 15 blocks are also the most by any squad member. Additionally, Ennis has swiped the most steals, with 19.
