SAN ANTONIO—On Wednesday, the UTSA women's basketball team took down Tulsa, 64-54, in American Athletic Conference action to secure their first 10-game winning streak since the 2007-08 season. The 'Runners also won their 11th consecutive contest in the Convocation Center, tying a stretch from Jan. 9, 2002-Nov. 28, 2003, for the program record.
The Roadrunners (17-2, 8-0 The American) bested the Golden Hurricane (12-7, 3-4 The American), with graduate student Nina De Leon Negron pouring in 19 points with 10 rebounds, eight assists, a block and a steal. Sophomore Idara Udo collected 16 points with eight boards, two blocks, and two steals, while junior Cheyenne Rowe scored nine with four rebounds.
Tulsa started off hot, building an 11-4 advantage early in the first, but UTSA responded with a De Leon Negron triple, sparking a 9-0 surge that saw a 13-11 Roadrunner lead. TU scored the next four before sophomore Aysia Proctor and Rowe hit shots for a 17-15 score line.
After trading threes to open the second stanza, Udo finished a transition layup, and redshirt senior Jordyn Jenkins connected from beyond the arc to increase the UTSA edge to seven. Tulsa posted seven of the final 10 points in the half, sending the squads into the locker room with the Roadrunners leading, 28-25.
The Golden Hurricane sunk a trey to knot things in the third before the 'Runners began rolling with a 15-2 spurt that featured seven points for Udo and multiple De Leon Negron triples. Now trailing 45-32, Tulsa worked a rally of their own, using a 12-2 run to pull back within three at the period's conclusion.
Udo and De Leon Negron hit shots to start the fourth and work a 53-44 edge. Tulsa used a 7-2 swing to keep things close and a Proctor layup saw a 57-51 score line with four minutes remaining. A Rowe layup increased the advantage to eight, and from there, UTSA closed things out for a 64-53 victory.
The Roadrunners will next face South Florida, with a matchup next Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT inside the Yuengling Center.
