LAS CRUCES, N.M. — UTSA women’s tennis improves to 3-0 to start the 2025 season after defeating New Mexico State 6-1 on Saturday, Jan. 18, at the NM State Tennis Center in Las Cruces, N.M.
UTSA stayed dominant in their first three matches of the season and has just dropped one point in the three matches. The Roadrunners added one more to the win column to improve to 3-0.
The Roadrunners will stay west to take on UTEP in El Paso, Texas on Jan. 19 at noon at the El Paso Tennis Club.
Match 1
UTSA had to fight back after losing the first doubles match as Ekua Youri teamed up with Valeria Sanchez to take down Dora Kurdi and Whitney Moon of NM State. A tandem of Letizia Corsini and Vitoria Baccino gave the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead as they defeated Anna Pinaieva and Nadia Nameth.
Baccino kept the wins coming for the Roadrunners as she put away Moon 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3. With a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 5 Arina Babenko gifted the Roadrunners a 3-0 lead. Sanchez handled her opponent at No. 4, defeating Nadia Nameth 6-4, 7-5 for the Roadrunners’ 4th point.
At No. 2, Youri made her 2025 season singles debut, defeating Lisa Zhu 6-1,3-5, 6-1 to put the Roadrunners up 5-0. Corsini took her time to defeat Pinaieva 6-1, 3-6, 10-8 to give the Roadrunners a 6-0 lead.
