'Runners best Blazers, 73-63, extending winning streak to nine

UTSA last won nine straight in the 2008-09 campaign

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The UTSA women's basketball team secured a 73-63 victory over UAB in American Athletic Conference action at Bartow Arena on Saturday, extending their winning streak to nine, the program's longest since the 2008-09 season.

The Roadrunners (16-2, 7-0 The American) bested the Blazers (12-7, 3-4 The American), as redshirt senior Jordyn Jenkins led the way, scoring 21 with nine rebounds, two steals and a block. UTSA's guards shined, as junior Sidney Love tallied 14 points, six assists, and five rebounds, while graduate student Nina De Leon Negron scored 14 to go with five helpers and five boards.

Jenkins and sophomore Idara Udo both hit shots in the first to work a 4-0 edge, and Jenkins drained two free throws to go up six. The Blazers then sunk back-to-back three-pointers to tie the contest. After exchanging blows, UAB got another triple to fall to snag a 9-8 lead. Shortly after, Love hit a pair from the charity stripe, and De Leon Negron from downtown for a 15-11 advantage at the period's conclusion.

The UTSA run continued in the second, as Udo and De Leon Negron got buckets before another Blazer trey saw a 19-14 score line. De Leon Negron and Jenkins swiftly responded with three-pointers of their own to grow a 25-14 edge. The barrage from beyond the arc continued as freshman Taylor Ross and Love both connected en route to a 33-22 lead. UAB snagged four of the half's final six points, sending UTSA into the locker room up, 35-26.

A freshman Damara Allen triple capped off a 7-0 start to the third that ballooned UTSA's lead to 16. Shortly after, the 'Runners surged for 10 in a row in a stretch that saw sophomore Aysia Proctor and Jenkins convert from downtown en route to a 54-31 advantage. Not to be deterred, UAB hit a trio of three-pointers across the final two minutes, resulting in a 56-40 score entering the final frame.

UTSA then kept the Blazers at arms-length across the fourth, leading to a 73-63 victory.

The Roadrunners will now return to San Antonio, with a matchup with Tulsa awaiting at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the Convocation Center.
