SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s tennis team pushed its winning streak to four matches and remained undefeated at home with a 4-1 victory over UTEP on Saturday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center.
Following a four-hour delay due to wet conditions, the Roadrunners rolled past the Miners to run their record to 14-6, matching their win total from last season. UTSA also improved to 7-0 at home this year and 7-5 all-time against UTEP.
UTSA jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to victories on the top two doubles courts. Fatima Gutierrez and Ekua Youri made quick work of Carlotta Mencaglia and Hanna Telzynska with a 6-1 triumph at No. 2. The Roadrunners faced early deficits on the other two courts, but Cassie McLay and Aleksandra Zlatarova rallied from down 2-0 for a 6-4 win at the top spot to clinch the doubles point.
In singles, Youri cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Emma Stuart at No. 6 to hand the home team a 2-0 advantage. Zlatarova registered a straight-set victory over Carlotta Mencaglia at the second spot in the lineup with a 6-4, 6-0 decision to make it 3-0.
The Miners picked up a point when Paloma Hennicaux outlasted Eva Beyebach, 7-6 (4), 6-3 at No. 5. However, McLay clinched the match at No. 3, defeating Elena Dibattista, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.
The Roadrunners will stay home to host New Mexico State at 11 a.m. on Sunday before they conclude the regular season at home against Lamar at noon on Wednesday, April 10. Four student-athletes will be celebrated for Senior Day, including Eva Beyebach, Cassie McLay, Magda Tuells and Aleksandra Zlatarova.
