SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s tennis team remained perfect at home with a 4-0 shutout of Sam Houston on Wednesday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center.
With their third straight win, the Roadrunners ran their record to 13-6 on the season and a perfect 6-0 on their home courts. It also pulled UTSA to within one victory of matching last year’s win total. The Bearkats fell to 7-8
It took UTSA only 30 minutes to clinch the doubles point with a pair of comfortable victories. Vittoria Baccino and Magda Tuells combined for a 6-0 blanking of Vianne Schwab and Linn Svaerd on court three, picking up their fifth win of the season in the process. Cassie McLay and Aleksandra Zlatarova then scored a 6-2 decision over Megan Basson and Paula Cerda at the top of the doubles lineup to secure the 1-0 lead and push their season record to 10-1.
In singles, Youri made quick work of Schwab at the sixth spot, 6-0, 6-1. That moved the freshman’s singles record to 10-4 on the year. Zlatarova sent UTSA to the brink of clinching the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Cerda at No. 2 for her fourth straight and 10th overall victory of 2024. McLay provided the decisive win on the third court, as the Florida native registered a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over India Fenleys.
UTSA was leading on the other three singles courts when the match was decided. Tuells held a 6-3, 4-1 advantage over Svaerd at No. 5, Baccino was up, 7-5, 5-0, on court four and Fatima Gutierrez had battled back from a deficit for a 7-6 (5) decision in the opening set at the top of the lineup.
The Roadrunners will continue their homestand next weekend, hosting New Mexico State at 1 p.m. on April 5 and UTEP at 10 a.m. on April 6. UTSA will then conclude the regular season at home at 12 p.m. on April 10, facing Lamar for Senior Day. Admission is free to all UTSA home tennis matches.
