UTSA defeats UIW to earn best season start in the Kroll era

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women’s tennis team defeated crosstown rival UIW, 6-1, in a Battle of the Birds matchup on Saturday.

 

UTSA improved to an impressive 4-0 record to the start the season – the best start for the squad under head coach Ki Kroll. The Roadrunners improved to a 9-1 record over the Cardinals in the all-time series.

 

The Roadrunners won the doubles point to get things started. Cassie McLay and Eva Beyebach took the third court by default due to UIW not having enough players. Magda Tuells and Vittoria Baccino then defeated Ine Lamprecht and Barbara Havlova at court two, 6-1, to clinch the doubles point for UTSA.

 

With UIW being down two players, UTSA took the fifth and sixth courts by default as Tuells and Milica Milosavljevic added easy wins to their record. At the No. 4 spot, freshman Ekua Youri clinched the win for the Roadrunners, defeating Havlova by sets of 6-0 and 6-1. Fatima Gutierrez battled through three sets against Sofia Franco Saucedo at the top spot, winning by sets of 6-2, 3-6, and 10-4. Baccino fell to Isid Hernandez in another three-set battle at the second court. McLay concluded singles play with a win over Lamprecht at the No. 3 spot (1-6, 6-4, 10-8) to lead UTSA to a 6-1 victory over UIW.
