UTSA set to face Roos and Rebels in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS – The UTSA women’s tennis team travels to Las Vegas this weekend, going head-to-head with the Kansas City Roos on Friday and the UNLV Rebels on Saturday – both at 10 a.m. PT/12 p.m. CT at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Roadrunners have held a 5-0 record through the start of the season, the best start under head coach Ki Kroll. UTSA is coming off a hard-fought 4-1 win over Southland powerhouse Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, clinched by freshman Vittoria Baccino. UTSA has continued to dominate in doubles action, earning a 12-1 record, to go along with a 22-6 singles advantage.

A pair of Roadrunners are undefeated in singles play, including No. 2 Fatima Gutierrez and No. 6 Magda Tuells. Sophomore Gutierrez has been clutch for the Roadrunners, clinching the first three wins of the season. Freshmen Ekua Youri and Baccino have faired well at the third and fourth courts, battling to 4-1 records. Baccino has proven that she can battle through adversity as four of her opponents have taken her to a third set and she has won 75 percent of them.

Kansas City has a 1-2 record so far this season. The Roos have five returners on this year’s squad. UTSA holds a 2-1 advantage over Kansas City, after the Roadrunners defeated the Roos, 4-1, last season on Feb. 19, 2023.

UNLV is set to face New Mexico State on Friday, prior to facing the Roadrunners on Saturday. The Rebels have held a 3-2 record through the start of the season and are currently on a three-match win streak. UNLV holds a 4-1 advantage over UTSA in the all-time series. The Rebels are coming off a Mountain West Conference Championship in 2023 and have five returners from that team this season. Coco Zhao leads the team with a 4-1 singles record at the fifth spot, as well as a 4-1 record at the second doubles court. The Rebels have been struggling in singles action, toting a 13-12 record so far this season.

The Roadrunners return to the Lone Star State, heading to Houston next weekend to face the Houston Cougars on Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. CT and the Rice Owls on Feb. 24 at 11 a.m.
