UTSA Athletics to Break Ground on Basketball and Volleyball Training Facility on December 18

by Sean Cartell

UTSA Athletics will break ground on its more than 53,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Basketball and Volleyball Training Facility at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 18.

The facility, which will be completed at a cost of more than $35 million, will be located next to the Roadrunner Athletics Center of Excellence on Barshop Blvd and will house the daily operations of the UTSA men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs. It will feature two full-sized NCAA practice courts, locker rooms and a team lounge for each program, a weight room, an athletic training/hydrotherapy space, team meeting rooms and coaches offices for each of the three programs.

The Basketball and Volleyball Training Facility is part of a partnership with Bexar County and the City of San Antonio, each of which is investing $5 million to the project. As part of the construction process, there is a funding agreement similar to the Roadrunner Athletics Center for Excellence and the Park West Fieldhouse.

"We are thrilled to break ground on the Basketball and Volleyball Training Facility," UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos said. "This will be a difference-maker for all of our student-athletes in these three sports, providing them with 24-hour access to practice courts, in addition to state-of-the-art locker rooms, team lounges and strength & conditioning facilities. I want to thank Dr. Eighmy for his unwavering support, along with the City of San Antonio, Bexar County, the donors and everyone who has contributed to making this facility a reality."

Those speaking at the groundbreaking include:

  • Taylor Eighmy, President, UTSA
  • Lisa Campos, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, UTSA
  • Grant Moody, Bexar County Precinct 3 Commissioner
  • Manny Pelaez, San Antonio District 8 City Councilman

The architect for the project is Populous and Skanska USA Inc., is the construction firm.
