SAN ANTONIO – On Thursday, the UTSA women's basketball team cruised past UT Arlington, 76-61, to wrap up nonconference play undefeated in the Convocation Center for the first time since the 1992-93 season.
The Roadrunners (8-2, 0-0 The American) bested the Lady Mavericks (4-6, 0-0 WAC) and, in doing so, won eight of their first 10 for the first time since the 1997-98 campaign.
Junior Sidney Love paced the contest and tied her season-high in points with 21. Graduate student Nina De Leon Negron facilitated the offense to the tune of seven points, eight assists and six rebounds, while redshirt senior Jordyn Jenkins tallied 14 points with five boards, two blocks and a steal. Sophomore Idara Udo also got in on the action, scoring 10.
Udo banged home a triple to open the contest, ahead of multiple Love makes and a junior Cheyenne Rowe jumper that saw a 10-0 advantage. Jenkins split a pair of free throws before a UTA bucket midway through the frame saw an 11-2 score line. The 'Runners extended their lead with a flurry of free throws and a Udo basket, prompting a 21-6 edge. The Lady Mavs knocked down a freebie, and Jenkins connected on a two for a 23-7 UTSA lead entering the second.
An 11-0 run in the second extended the Roadrunner lead to 23 with five minutes remaining in the half. UTA broke the streak for a 37-16 score line, ahead of a 42-21 UTSA advantage at halftime.
The Lady Mavs sparked a seven-point surge in the third to issue a 53-35 score, but the Roadrunners swiftly responded with an 8-0 run of their own, rebuilding a 36-point edge. From there, UTSA carried a 63-42 lead into the fourth, ahead of a 76-61 victory.
UTSA will now face Texas State on Saturday, with a noon tipoff at Strahan Arena in what represents the Roadrunner's final nonconference contest.
