About the UTSA Roadrunners
The Roadrunners had a week back in the gym and in the classroom, with finals week on the schedule, coming off the most challenging week of the non-conference schedule. UTSA faced consecutive teams receiving Associated Press Poll votes at Saint Mary’s and Arkansas – both likely NCAA tournament teams. The Roadrunners had shining moments in both ultimate losses – coming back from a 23-point deficit to force overtime at perennial powerhouse SMC, while heading into half with a five-point lead against the John Calipari-coached Razorbacks.
Proving to be the steadiest Roadrunner, not just last week, but the entire season so far, senior guard Primo Spears leads the American Athletic Conference for the third consecutive week and ranks fourth nationally among DI scorers at 23.1 ppg. He’s scored in double-figures each time out and logged a 20+ performance in six of eight games. Spears also leads the AAC and is sixth in the NCAA with a whopping 36:39 minutes per game. Not to mention a solid 86.4 percent at the line as UTSA’s most frequent free throw shooter, also chipping in a team-leading 3.6 assists per game. Also putting up double-digits in six games and averaging 13.0 ppg with 3.3 assists, sophomore point guard Marcus Millender is a steady leader out front for the Roadrunners and dangerous at the line at 84.6 percent. Topping the Roadrunners on the boards, senior forward Jonnivius Smith averages 8.9 rebounds (39th NCAA) and is 27th in the country with 2.0 blocks per game. Meanwhile, senior guard/forward Raekwon Horton averages 9.0 points and leads the team with 2.0 steals each time out, the third-best average in the conference (80th in the NCAA). Last time out against Arkansas, senior guard Tai’Reon Joseph made his UTSA debut, jumping right into the limelight with a pickoff of Davonte Davis’ pass that saw Joseph win the footrace for a highlight-reel dunk in the early moments of the game. Joseph averaged 20.5 points per game on 43.8 percent shooting last season at Southern.
The Roadrunners remain one of the top-scoring transition teams in the country, coming in at eighth with 18.25 ppg on the fast break. Furthering that effort, UTSA makes opponents cough up the ball, ranking 11th nationally with 10.3 steals per game and 33rd with an AAC-leading 15.88 turnovers per game. The Roadrunners are also formidable at the line with an NCAA second-ranked 82.7 percent free throw shooting.
About the Series
This will be the first meeting between these programs, but hardly the last. UTSA will also travel to Grand Forks, directly after Friday’s home game, returning an in-season home-and-home with the Fighting Hawks at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15 at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
About the North Dakota Fighting Hawks
North Dakota arrives in San Antonio for the first time coming from Orem, Utah, following Wednesday’s 80-57 loss at Utah Valley, shooting just 33.8 percent to Utah Valley’s 51.7 percent in the loss. Opening the month, UND defeated Weber State at home (80-75) and lost to Eastern Washington on the road (87-81), both last week in the Summit League-Big Sky Challenge.
The Fighting Hawks went 18-14 last season as the program continues to grow with the Sather era – going 10-6 in league play to finish second in the conference regular season standings. Last year, UND led the Summit with 6.3 steals per game and shot 44.4 percent from the field, holding opponents to the same standard. At 36.6 rpg, they were second in their league for rebound average.
The Fighting Hawks are 4-6 and went 18-14 last season as the program continues to grow with the Sather era – going 10-6 in league play to finish second in the 2023-24 conference regular season standings. Last year, UND led the Summit with 6.3 steals per game and shot 44.4 percent from the field, holding opponents to the same standard. At 36.6 rpg, they were second in their league for rebound average. This season, UND ranks 87th nationally with 38.6 rebounds per game, but hits the offensive glass extra hard, coming into Friday with a 25th-ranked 14.1 orpg average. However, their steals count (5.1) and turnovers forced (10.1) are way down from a year ago, while also allowing 12.8 turnovers of their own.
Back from last season and leading North Dakota’s offense, junior guard Treysen Eaglestaff played and started all 32 games last year, coming in as the Summit League's top returning three-point shooter after ranking second in three-point percentage (38.3%) and in three-pointers per game (2.50) last season – earning him a deserved spot on the Preseason All-Summit first team. So far this season, he’s averaging 18.5 ppg with a team-high 2.5 threes per game, grabbing 3.1 rpg while pacing UND with 2.0 assists per contest. Sophomore guard Mier Panoam puts in 12.2 points and 5.0 boards on average, while senior forward Amar Kuljuhovic shoots a team-high 53.3 percent for 11.5 ppg and 6.6 rpg. He ranked 55th nationally in rebounding average last season at 8.6 rpg.
Up Next
